Topics include human origins, genetic variations, archaeology, linguistics, primatology, and contemporary cultures. This course introduces the nature of human culture. Emphasis is placed on cultural theory, methods of fieldwork, and cross-cultural comparisons in the areas of ethnology, language, and the cultural past. This course provides an ethnographic survey of societies around the world covering their distinctive cultural characteristics and how these relate to cultural change. Emphasis is placed on the similarities and differences in social institutions such as family, economics, politics, education, and religion.
