As you enjoy the final days of summer, you may have considered how appealing a new career could be. The Workforce Continuing Education division of Sandhills Community College has several quick-training classes set to begin in August. Class offerings include transportation, public safety, and business. Additional classes will start in September. Check the college's website under Workforce Continuing Education for upcoming construction, industry, and manufacturing classes.
Transportation
In "Auto Safety Inspection," students will be certified to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. You must have a valid driver's license for this class. Held Monday and Tuesday, August 7 and 8, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Commercial Learners Permit Prep" provides training in inspecting tractor-trailers and assuming driver responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on defensive driving, federal motor carrier safety regulations, vehicle systems, hours of service, and accident prevention. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge to pass the required tests to obtain a class "A" learner's permit for the commercial driver's license. Held Tuesday-Thursday, August 8-10, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.
"OBD Emissions Control Inspection" certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles OBD Emissions Control Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is "Certified Auto Safety Inspection." This is also a recertification class. Held Monday and Tuesday, August 28 and 29, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.
Business
"Notary Public" is required for anyone interested in becoming a Notary Public for the first time. It is recommended for all notaries as a refresher course. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook before class to better prepare for the state examination at the end of the class. Note: The current edition of The Notary Public Manual for North Carolina, March 2016, ISBN: 978-1-56011-851-0, is required for admittance to the class and can be purchased at the SCC bookstore or on Amazon. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook prior to class attendance to be better prepared for the state examination given at the end of the class.
NCGS 10B-5(b) provides the following requirements to be commissioned as a Notary Public in NC: 1) Be at least 18 years of age or legally emancipated as defined in Article 35 of Chapter 7B of the General Statutes; 2) Reside or have a regular place of work or business in this state; 3) Reside legally in the United States; 4) Speak, read, and write the English language; 5) Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; 6) Pass the course of instruction described in this Article unless the person is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar; 7) Purchase and keep as a reference the most recent manual approved by the Secretary that describes the duties and authority of notaries public; 8) Submit an application containing no significant misstatement or omission of fact. Students must provide current state or federal picture identification for admission to class. Active-duty military and civilian ID cards do not meet the identification requirement.
"Notary Public" will be held on Tuesday, August 15, from 8 am-5 pm; this class will cost $75 plus the cost of the text.
Public Safety
"EMT Basic" prepares students to provide emergency care for the sick and injured. Students will learn to respond to a variety of emergency medical situations. Upon successful completion, the student can sit for the state certification exam. Course requirements: a copy of your high school or GED diploma by the first night of class. Additional costs for course specific clinicals. Students should prepare to have proof of a high school diploma or GED diploma by the first night of class. Held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, August 14-December 14 from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $180 plus a $5 tech fee plus a $31 uniform and clinical fee plus the cost of text. Scholarships are available for this class.
"TR Series for NC Wildlife and NC SHP" is a certification-related course that will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Five (General) and Chapter Six (Ropes) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. Individual courses included in this block course are Rescue Operations, Anchors and MAS, Fixed Rope Systems, Health and Wellness, Helicopter Transport, Horizontal Systems, Lowers and Raises, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Rescue Equipment, Rope Basics, and Victim Management. This class will be held August 14-18 on Monday-Thursday 8:30 am-5 pm and Fridays 8 am-4 pm.

Seats are still available for these Workforce Continuing Education classes and do not require an application. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 am and 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8 am-noon on Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Fall Semester
A fall semester flightPath has been published on the Sandhills Community College website (www.sandhills.edu/flightpath). It contains information about all curriculum programs and Workforce Continuing Education classes set to begin in August through December.
Curriculum classes will begin on August 14. In addition to the traditional 16-week semester, there will be two eight-week sessions, one beginning on August 14 and the second on October 11. Boys & Girls Club
A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the Sandhills campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.
In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to Sandhills students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. Classes for High School Students
Moore and Hoke County High School students can take SCC classes as juniors and seniors at no cost. High school counselors can help schedule these classes, or home or private school students can contact Kim McMillan at mcmillank@sandhills.edu
Students who reside in Moore and Hoke Counties and successfully complete the required number of classes through Sandhills while in high school can qualify to receive two full years of paid tuition through our Sandhills Promise program. Sandhills awards over $350,000 to pay tuition and fees for Sandhills Promise students each year. The Sandhills Promise applications are due each year by mid-July.
