SCC FunFest Competitions
Competition dates, submission deadlines and other details for the 2027 FunFest will be posted as information becomes available. Please check back for updates.
Middle School
Students will work individually or in teams of two to design a mobile app for a restaurant
or food truck. The app should be visually appealing, easy to navigate, and fully functional.
Teams will give a 2-minute presentation to demonstrate their app and explain how it
meets the competition requirements.
High School
This competition is not currently offered for high school students.

High School
Teams of up to four (4) high school students will complete a 34-point vehicle inspection
to demonstrate their automotive diagnostic skills. The competition tests each team's
ability to accurately inspect a vehicle within the allotted time.
Middle School
Students will design and build a balsa wood bridge that is as lightweight as possible
while supporting the greatest amount of weight. Bridges are tested until failure,
and the winner is determined by the bridge with the highest efficiency (the amount
of weight it holds compared to its own weight).
High School
This competition is not currently offered for high school students.
Students will design, build, and launch a water-powered bottle rocket made from a 2-liter plastic soda bottle. The goal is to keep the rocket in the air for the longest possible time using only water and air pressure.
Middle School

High School
Teams of 2–3 high school students will demonstrate their baking skills by preparing
12 identical chocolate chip cookies. The competition emphasizes accuracy, consistency,
teamwork, and proper baking techniques from measuring ingredients to the finished
product.
Teams of two students will design and build a protective device using only the materials provided. The goal is to keep a raw egg from breaking when it is dropped from increasing heights onto a concrete surface.
Middle School

High School
Teams of 3 high school students will compete in a hands-on culinary challenge that
showcases their knife skills, sushi preparation, teamwork, and food safety practices.
The competition includes two rounds, with the top team from each school advancing
to the sushi challenge.

Teams of 3–6 high school students will compete in a series of three health science
challenges that test their knowledge, technical skills, teamwork, and attention to
detail.
Middle School
Teams of 2–4 middle school students will research a career in Healthcare, Biotechnology,
or Emergency Management and create a research poster highlighting what they learned.
Teams will present their poster to a panel of judges, demonstrating their understanding
of the career and its importance.
High School

Middle School
Teams of 1–2 middle school students will combine their baking, creativity, and entrepreneurship
skills by creating a signature cookie, designing an eye-catching display, and delivering
a persuasive sales pitch to the judges.
High School

Teams of 4 high school students will demonstrate their horticulture knowledge and
landscaping skills through three hands-on events: Plant Identification, Pest Identification,
and a Landscape Layout Challenge.
Teams of 2–4 middle & high school students will develop a business idea and create a comprehensive business plan explaining how their product or service will succeed. Teams will present their idea to a panel of judges in a professional business pitch.
Teams of 1–3 middle school students will create a marketing campaign for a local attraction by designing promotional materials that align with the year's theme. Teams will present their campaign and explain their design choices in a 2–3 minute presentation.
High SchoolTeams of 1–3 high school students will create a cohesive marketing campaign for a local attraction by designing a variety of promotional materials. Teams will present their campaign and explain their design choices in a 2–3 minute presentation.
Teams of 2 students will design and build a one-of-a-kind basswood show car that showcases their creativity, craftsmanship, and originality. Unlike the racing competition, these cars are judged solely on their appearance and design.
Teams of 2 students will design, build, and race a CO₂-powered basswood dragster to achieve the fastest time on the track. Cars compete in timed races.
Teams of 1–2 students will design and build a mousetrap-powered vehicle that travels 10 meters using only the energy stored in a standard mousetrap spring. The goal is to stop as close to the 10-meter target as possible.
Students will deliver a 2–3-minute speech on a designated topic that demonstrates their public speaking, communication, and presentation skills. Speeches are judged on organization, content, delivery, and the effective use of supporting evidence.
Students will design, build, and fly a rubber band-powered model airplane with the goal of achieving the longest sustained flight time. Participants bring their completed airplanes to FunFest and compete in timed flight trials.
Middle School
Students will design and build a toothpick bridge that combines strong engineering
design and craftsmanship. Bridges are tested to determine how much weight they can
support before failing, with both design quality and strength considered in the final
results.
High School
This competition is not currently offered for high school students.
Note: Tennis shoes are required while in the SCC Gym.
