For Frederick “Freddy” Ray, music is a powerful way to connect with students and offer encouragement as they navigate their educational journeys.

Frederick “Freddy” Ray has found a way to blend his love for music with his deep commitment to the students and community at Sandhills Community College. As a longtime member of the college’s housekeeping team, Freddy’s role extends far beyond maintaining campus spaces—he is a familiar, uplifting presence for students across campus.

With more than 27 years of experience in music, Freddy writes and produces songs that reflect his passion for hip hop, blues, and storytelling. Much of his music is available on major streaming platforms, and he continues to explore new ways to create, including embracing emerging technologies in music production.

“Music has always been my way of expressing what’s on my mind,” Freddy said. “There’s always a song playing in my head.”

On campus, Freddy’s love of music often becomes a bridge to meaningful conversations. Students regularly stop to talk with him about classes, life challenges, and goals for the future. Whether offering a listening ear or a few words of encouragement, Freddy sees these everyday moments as opportunities to support students in simple but lasting ways.

If I can help somebody get through their day just by being positive, then I’ve done something right.

Freddy takes pride in being part of the Sandhills community and values the connections he’s built with students, faculty, and staff over the years. Through music and conversation, he continues to make an impact—reminding students that encouragement can come from unexpected places.
