Finding Purpose Through Curiosity and Courage
For Sarah Baker, her experience at Sandhills Community College has been less about following a straight line and more about discovering what truly fits. As a current SCC student, Sarah continues to take classes while actively shaping her path, learning that growth often comes from curiosity, flexibility, and a willingness to change direction when something no longer aligns.
During her time at SCC, Sarah participated in the Promise program and explored a variety of academic interests. Through that process, she made a thoughtful decision to shift her focus rather than complete an Associate Degree, choosing instead to pursue certifications in Criminal Justice Technology and Business Administration. The choice allowed her to better align her education with her evolving goals while continuing her coursework at the college.
One experience, however, pushed Sarah further than she ever expected. When she accepted an internship with The Walt Disney Company, she admits it wasn’t something she was initially excited about. Stepping far outside her comfort zone felt uncertain at first, but the experience quickly became transformational.
"What started as something I wasn’t even excited about turned into one of the most meaningful experiences of my life," Sarah shared.
Through the internship, Sarah gained more than professional insight. She formed lifelong friendships with people from across the country and around the world—connections that continue to influence how she views opportunity, growth, and what’s possible when you say yes to something unfamiliar.
Today, while continuing her education at SCC, Sarah is also co-owner of The Pines Times, working alongside her parents and applying her creativity as a self-taught social media content creator. Through business partnerships she never imagined herself being part of, she has learned firsthand how to adapt, learn on the fly, and trust the process.
Outside of school and work, Sarah’s interests reflect her curiosity and passion for hands-on learning. From beekeeping and competitive shooting to her love of animals, she dreams of one day living on a farm centered around balance, purpose, and intention.
When asked what advice she would offer fellow students, Sarah keeps it simple: try, explore, and show up. "Give yourself the opportunity to make opportunities," she said.
You are a light. Always let it shine.
As Sarah continues taking classes and building her future, her journey remains guided by resilience, intention, and a desire to grow. Wherever that path leads, one thing is certain—she’s moving forward with confidence and purpose.
"If I had to leave you with one thing," she says, "it would be this: You are a light. Always let it shine."
