Welding Classes to Begin at SCC in August

Student welding at SCC.

Turn up the summer heat a few more degrees and sign up for a welding class. The Advanced Manufacturing department at Sandhills Community College offers high-tech, in-demand career training through state-of-the-art equipment designed to meet the growing demand for skilled workers. Through partnerships with local employers, this program aligns class offerings and curriculums to provide employers a pipeline of skilled workers with job-specific skills. These programs do not take an extended period to complete, and many students have employment lined up before graduation. We even offer job placement assistance and career coaching.

The Welding Program is based on the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum and is designed to train students for mastery of basic welding skills and techniques including safety, metal cutting, and fitting, and welding skills using generally recognized industry processes. Upon successful completion of “Welding Level I,” students earn the Level 1 NCCER Welding Certification and be prepared to work in entry-level positions.

“Welding Level I” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 13-May 19 from 6-9 p.m. A second class will be held on Saturdays, Aug. 17-May 23 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The cost is $285 plus the cost of text.

The “Welding Level II” program follows the National Center for Construction and Research (NCCER) curriculum and builds upon content learned in “Welding Level I.” Students learn the physical characteristics and mechanical properties of metals, pre and post-heating of metals, gas metal, and flux-cored arc welding, as well as welding safety and symbols, and interpreting detailed welding drawings. Upon successful completion of written and performance assessments and required training hours, students will be awarded a certificate of completion from NCCER. The prerequisite for this class is “Welding Level I.”

“Welding Level II” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 19-June 10 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $285 plus the cost of text.
