Withdrawing from Courses
Students who receive financial aid but do not successfully complete their courses may have to return unearned funds to the state of North Carolina and/or the Department of Education.
North Carolina Policy
If a student receives state financial aid, including but not limited to, North Carolina Community College Grant, North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship, or North Carolina Longleaf Commitment Grant, and withdraws from SCC prior to the 35% point in the term, a return of funds calculation will be performed to determine whether funds must be returned to the state.
35% points (dates are based on 16-week classes only)
Fall 2022: September 24, 2022
Spring 2023: February 17, 2023
*If you are in 8-week sessions only, please contact our office for more information on withdrawing from classes*
Federal Policy
The Federal Refund Policy applies to all students receiving federal financial aid funds including those who qualify for the state refund policy mentioned above. This policy requires the school to determine the amount of Title IV aid a student has earned. The earned amount is determined by calculating the number of class days prior to the date of withdrawal. The unearned portion must be returned. This may require repayment by the student of all or part of any federal money received by the student. If a student withdraws after the 60% point of the term, the student has earned 100% of their aid.
60% points (dates are based on 16-week classes only for Fall and Spring and A session for Summer)
Fall 2022: October 23, 2022
Spring 2023: March 26, 2023
