GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (44 Semester Hours Credit)
Forty-four semester hours of credit in General Education Core courses are required as outlined on the NCCCS Curriculum Standards for Associate in Science degree programs. The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers.

English Composition (6 SHC)  Two English composition courses are required.

• ENG 111, Expository Writing, is required as the first composition course.
• The second composition course must be selected from the following:
  • ENG 112: Argument-based Research
  • ENG 114: Professional Research & Reporting

Humanities/Fine Arts (9 SHC)
Three courses from three discipline areas are required. At least one course must be a literature course. One 3 SHC speech communication course may be substituted for one 3 SHC humanities/fine arts course except literature.

• Select the required literature course and two additional courses from the following:

Social/Behavioral Sciences (9 SHC)
Select three courses from three of the following discipline areas.

• One course must be a history course:
  • HIS 111, 112, 121, 122, 131, 132
• Two additional courses from two of the following discipline areas are required:
  • Anthropology (ANT 210, 220, 221, 240)
  • Economics (ECO 151, 251, 252)
  • Geography (GEO 111)
  • Political Science (POL 110, 120, 210, 220)
  • Psychology (PSY 150, 237, 239, 241, 281)
  • Sociology (SOC 210, 213, 220, 225)

Natural Sciences/Mathematics (20 SHC)

• Natural Sciences (8 SHC):
  • The following physics sequence is required:
    • PHY 251 and 252: General Physics I and II (8 SHC)
• Mathematics (12 SHC):
  • The following courses are required:
    • MAT 175: Precalculus (4 SHC)*
    • MAT 271: Calculus I (4 SHC)
    • MAT 272: Calculus II (4 SHC)

OTHER REQUIRED HOURS (20-21 Semester Hours Credit)

• Academic Related (1 SHC): ACA 122 College Transfer Success (1 SHC)
• Physical Education (2-4 SHC) is required at Sandhills Community College. Select two 1-2 SHC PED courses.
• The following courses are required (4 SHC):
  • MAT 273: Calculus III (4 SHC)
• One of the following courses is required (3 SHC):
  • MAT 280: Linear Algebra (3 SHC) or
  • MAT 285: Differential Equations (3 SHC>
• One of the following courses is required (3 SHC):
  • CSC 120: Computing Fundamentals (4 SHC) or
  • CSC 134: C++ Programming (3 SHC) or
  • CSC 136: Fortran Programming (3 SHC) or
  • CSC 151: JAVA Programming (3 SHC)
• *Four (4) additional hours from college transfer courses approved as mathematics, natural sciences or computer sciences are required. (Note: If you take MAT 171 and MAT 172 instead of MAT 175, you may count MAT 172 in this category.
• Three (3) additional hours from college transfer courses approved as general education humanities are required.
• Three (3) additional hours from college transfer courses approved as general education social/behavioral sciences are required.

Note: Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language requirement, if applicable, prior to or after transferring to the senior institution.
