Sandhills Community College has several quick training classes set to begin in May. Class offerings include transportation, business, real estate, information technology, and teacher assistant training. Additional courses will start in June. Check the flightPath on the college's website for upcoming construction, industry, and manufacturing classes.

 

"Auto Safety Inspection" certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. A valid driver's license is a prerequisite for this class, which will be held Monday and Tuesday, May 13 and 14, from 6 to 10 pm. It will cost $75.

 

"Notary Public" is required for anyone interested in becoming a Notary Public for the first time. It is recommended for all notaries as a refresher course. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook before class to better prepare for the state examination at the end of the class. Note: The current edition of The Notary Public Manual for North Carolina, March 2016, ISBN: 978-1-56011-851-0, is required for admittance to the class and can be purchased at the SCC bookstore or on Amazon. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook prior to class attendance to be better prepared for the state examination given at the end of the class.

 

NCGS 10B-5(b) provides the following requirements to be commissioned as a Notary Public in NC: 1) Be at least 18 years of age or legally emancipated as defined in Article 35 of Chapter 7B of the General Statutes; 2) Reside or have a regular place of work or business in this state; 3) Reside legally in the United States; 4) Speak, read, and write the English language; 5) Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; 6) Pass the course of instruction described in this Article unless the person is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar; 7) Purchase and keep as a reference the most recent manual approved by the Secretary that describes the duties and authority of notaries public; 8) Submit an application containing no significant misstatement or omission of fact. Students must provide current state or federal picture identification for admission to class. Active-duty military and civilian ID cards do not meet the identification requirement.

 

"Notary Public" will be held on Tuesday, May 21, from 8 am-6 pm; this class will cost $75 plus the cost of the text.

 

"ENotary" is designed for instructional areas related to individuals who want to become commissioned as an electronic notary. Topics include legal, ethical, and procedural requirements of the Notary Act set forth in the General Statute 10B Article 2. Upon completion of this course, with a passing exam grade of 80%, a person is eligible to apply to the NC Secretary of State office. Individuals must have a current notary commission to participate in E-notary training. For more information, go to www.secretary.state. nc.us/notary. Held on Tuesday, May 7, from 8 am-noon, this class will cost $82. 

 

"Real Estate Mandatory Update #9923" is for all licensed real estate brokers who must complete the four-hour mandatory NC Real Estate Commission-approved update course. Held Thursday, May 9, from 8:30 am-12:30 pm, this class will cost $55.

 

"Real Estate Elective" will meet the four-hour continuing education elective set forth by the NC Real Estate Commission. Held Thursday, May 9, from 1:30-5:30 pm, this class will cost $55.

 

"Pathway to Teacher Assistant" is the first course in a series of two. This course is designed to fulfill 48 of the 96 hours of continuing education credits required for employment in the local school system as a Teacher Assistant. This course provides a review of skills needed for the successful completion of three WorkKeys Skills Assessments: Workplace Documents, Applied Math, & Writing. This class includes skills review in the areas of reading comprehension, math, and writing. It also includes computer skills training. Held Wednesday and 4 hours per week online, May 8-June 19 from 6-9 pm, this class will cost $130, which can be waived for qualified students. There will be no class on June 12.

 

"CompTIA A+ Certification Prep" is part of the CompTIA IT Credentials and Cyber Security track, which consists of three certification preparation courses and can be taken in any order. CompTIA A+ is the industry standard for establishing a career in IT and the preferred qualifying credential for technical support and operational roles. Learn to troubleshoot and problem solve, better understand a wide variety of issues ranging from networking and operating systems to mobile devices and security, and build the skills and knowledge to advance from A+ to Network+ to Security+ allowing you to complete the entire track and obtain all credentials. Each course counts toward DoD 8570 Information Assurance qualifications. Held Tuesday-Thursday, May 21-Aug. 22, from 6-9 pm, this class will cost $185 plus the courseware ($129).

Summer Semester

Summer semester curriculum (college credit) Sessions A and B begin on May 20, and Session C starts on July 1. For all information, go to www.sandhills.edu/learn.

New students taking curriculum/college credit classes must apply before registering. Sandhills has an open-door policy, which means all applicants are accepted. On www.sandhills.edu, new students can find the application at the top right. Returning or current students can register using Self-Service on MySCC.

Boys & Girls Club

A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the Sandhills campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, those who need to utilize the computer lab, or those who are working on projects. Club participants will receive assistance with homework, and dinner will be offered. The cost is $50 per child per year. The club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.

In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to Sandhills students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. For more information visit sandhillsbgc.org.
