Pinehurst N.C. February 17 is not the typical date for an Earth Day celebration but it is the day Sandhills Community College has set aside to increase awareness of environmental issues and sustainable living. Beginning at 10 a.m. on the campus of Sandhills Community College in the Dempsey Student Center, there will be FirstHealth screenings, cooking demonstrations and tastings, educational information on holistic approaches to health and physical activity sessions.
In addition, there is an additional message in this community event as a result of a partnership with Communities in Schools FirstSchool Garden Program and that is: 5-4-3-2-1-Go! This is to promote the new food grouping recommendation by the federal government. The numbers are represented: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 4 conscious decisions to choose water for drink, 3 servings of dairy (low-fat), 2 conscious choices to replace screen time with art, reading or outdoor activity and 1 physical activity element whether Yoga, Pilates, dance, sports, etc.
Another element of the celebration will focus on “Greening Your World.” We will include gardening, edible landscaping, irrigation, urban farming, recycling and green building and construction.
We invite participation from all over the community to join us on February 17 to promote these causes. There will be a small $30 donation requested for vendors to participate which will be used to fund this event. The donations are tax-deductible and should be made payable to: Sandhills Community College Foundation, PO Box 1189, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
