The Sandhills Community College’s Continuing Education Career Development division’s goal is to assist students in assessing interests, personality traits, and abilities in setting career and educational goals, and in creating a pathway that will lead to economic, social, and educational success. Career Development classes may be free for qualified students and Continuing Education scholarships are available.
Acquire the skills required for an entry-level position with the Department of Social Services by taking “Become a DSS Caseworker/Learn NC Fast.” WorkKeys assessments (a prerequisite for Phase II) are administered in this class to prepare you for the next phase of this program, “Income Maintenance Caseworker.”
“Become a DSS Caseworker/Learn NC Fast” will be held on May 28-July 18 from 6-9 p.m. The class fee of $130 is waived for qualified students.
Soft skills are vital to one’s success in the workplace. In “Working Smart – The Only NC Soft Skill Credential,” sessions will cover gaining a competitive edge, learning the secret to unlocking workplace communications, being more effective in the workplace, getting noticed by your employer, and climbing the ladder to success.
This class will be held Monday-Thursday, April 29-May 2 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A second class will be held Monday-Thursday, May 13-16 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Summer class sessions will also be held in June, July, and August. The cost of $75 is waived for qualified students.
Match your skills with an existing job or develop a training plan to learn new skills, explore career opportunities, and develop a written plan of action in “Revamp Your Career.” You will be able to create or update your résumé, customizing it for different jobs. Learn to sell yourself and stand out from other applicants in an interview. Learn to deal with the stress of long-term unemployment and how to use your age as an asset in your job search. “Revamp Your Career” will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesdays at the NCWorks Career Center on Shepard Trail in Aberdeen. “Tips for Mature Job Seekers” will be on May 22, “Resumes and Cover Letters” on June 5, “Budgeting 101” on June 19, “Work Attitudes & Behaviors” on July 3, “Ace the Job Interview” on July 17, “Tips for the Mature Job Seeker” on July 31, and “Resumes and Cover Letters” on Aug. 14. The class fee of $75 is waived for qualified students.
Learn to fine tune your computer skills in “Upgrade Your Computer Skills.” Engage in hands-on learning based on your individual needs whether you are a beginner or a savvy computer user. Get assistance with job searches, preparing cover letters, creating your résumé or completing an online application.
