Summer Classes to Begin Soon at SCC

Make your summer count! Sandhills Community College will be a hub of activity with Curriculum and Continuing Education classes this summer.

Curriculum/College Credit Summer Classes

Hundreds of classes in every major will be offered, both in the classroom and online. If you are attending college out of the area, save money by taking a class with us and transferring the credits into your course of study. Curriculum/college credit classes begin on May 24 and June 28.

Continuing Education May Classes

You can learn what you need in just a few summer months and land a job as a Medical Administrative Assistant, EKG Technician, Nurse Aide, or Pharmacy Technician. Or take the prerequisite course needed to go into Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, or Welding. Or learn something relaxing like Yoga.

Trades Pre-Requisite Class

“NCCER Core Essentials” is a prerequisite class to Level 1 Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Welding, and Sprinkler Fitting classes that begin fall semester. Modules include basic safety, communication skills and an introduction to construction drawings. Held Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 17-July 28 from 6-9 p.m. at Breakthrough Construction Center at the Larry Caddell Training Center in Carthage, this class will be $211.50 plus the textbook.

Auto Inspection

Successful completion of “Auto Safety Inspection” certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. Held on Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10 from 6-10 p.m., the class will cost $75. A valid driver’s license is required.

Drone Piloting

In “FAA Remote Drone Pilot,” students will be prepared for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certification exam. Topics include flight theory, flight operations, flight training, national air space, and weather.  This class uses the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Remote Pilot-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Study Guide, North Carolina Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operator Permit Knowledge Test Study Guide, and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Division of Aviation UAS flight standards best practices. Upon completion, students will be prepared to sit for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test and NCDOT UAS Operator Permit.

Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 31-June 30 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., “FAA Remote Drone Pilot” will be $130 plus the plus the textbook.


“ENotary” is a class for individuals who want to become commissioned as an electronic notary. Topics include legal, ethical and procedural requirements of the Notary Act set forth in the General Statute 10B Article 2. Upon completion of this course with a passing exam grade of 80%, students will be eligible to make an application with the NC Secretary of State office. Individuals must have current notary commission to participate in E-notary training. For more information, go to www.secretary.state.

Held on Wednesday, May 11 from 1-4 p.m., “ENotary” will cost $75 plus the textbook.


“Yoga for Strength and Flexibility” will build strength and flexibility in the mind, body and spirit through yoga asana, body weight, and light weights. Portions of meditation will be guided imagery. Students need to be able to get up and down from the floor. Bring your own yoga mat. Dumbbells will be provided or bring your own. Bring a yoga strap (or a tie) and blocks if you desire. Held on Tuesdays, May 31-June 28 from 6-7 p.m., this class will be $35.

“Vinyasa Flow Yoga” will build flexibility, strength, and balance in your body and mind and decrease unhealthy stress responses in everyday life. Grounding and centering techniques will be incorporated. Comprehensive instruction will help students find body alignment and meditative practice matching breath to movement. All levels are welcome. Please bring a yoga mat. Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 31-July 28 from 9-10am, this class will be $95.


In “Wealth Strategies for Retirees” students will learn how to safeguard their retirement portfolio in uncertain times. Class will cover properly balancing portfolios, asset allocation vs. asset location, how to dissect mutual funds, safe stock market strategies, income during retirement, tax strategies and more. Held on Wednesdays, May 17-June 7 from 11a.m.- 12:30p.m., this class will cost $35.


In “EKG Technician” you will become a Certified Electrocardiogram Technician (EKG) with ASPT. Study the anatomy and physiology of the heart, the pulmonary system (lungs), the electrical impulses that make the heart pump and contract, and the segments, waves, and intervals of a 12-lead EKG. Clinical experience will teach the placement of electrodes on the body.

Held on Mondays in the classroom and Wednesdays online, May 16-Aug 10 from 5:30-9:30 p.m., “EKG Technician” will cost $187.50 plus the cost of text. An additional class will be offered online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 17-Aug 4 from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

In “Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)” students can become a valuable member of the healthcare team. They will learn patient registration, telephone, scheduling, medical records, accounts receivable, data entry, and medical claims. This class prepares individuals for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).”

Held on Mondays in the classroom and Wednesdays online, May 16-Aug 10 from 5:30-9:30 p.m., “Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)” will cost $265.50 plus the cost of text. An additional class will be offered online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 17-Aug 4 from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

“Medical Terminology” covers the basic human anatomy and physiology for all systems, laboratory medicine, pharmacology, elements of medical terms and names of major diseases, including terms used in physical exams, operative procedures and diagnosis. This class prepares students for Continuing Education Health Care certification classes.

Held online on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 17-July 7 from 5:30-9:30 p.m., “Medical Terminology” will cost $185 plus the cost of text.

“Nurse Aid Level 1” will prepare students to work as a Nurse Aide under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals by performing hands-on patient care. Successful completion prepares students for the State Board examination for NC NA Registry listing. Email: for a complete list of program requirements. Held on Monday-Thursday, May 24-July 21 from 7:30 a.m.- 1 p.m., “Nurse Aid Level 1” will cost $205.50 plus the cost of course pack.

“Pharmacy Technician” will prepare students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and entry-level employment. Topics include technical procedures for preparing and dispensing prescriptions, packaging and labeling, controlled substance procedures, inventory control, pharmacy calculations and over-the-counter drugs. Upon completion, students will be able to perform basic supervised dispensing techniques in a community pharmacy setting.

Held on Tuesday in the classroom and Thursdays online, May 17-Aug 11 from 5:30-9:30 p.m., “Pharmacy Technician” will cost $187.50 plus the cost of texts. An additional class will be offered on Mondays online and Wednesdays in the classroom, May 17-Aug 11 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. 

“CPR for Healthcare Providers” is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR and other lifesaving skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. Held on Saturday, May 21 from 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., this class will cost $50 plus a $5 card fee.

IT Credentials and Cyber Security

“CompTIA Network+ Certification Prep” is the second class in the series of CompTIA IT Credentials and Cyber Security track of three certification preparation courses.

CompTIA Network+ helps develop career in IT infrastructure covering troubleshooting, configuring, and managing networks. You will learn to design and implement functional networks; configure, manage, and maintain essential network devices; implement network security, standards, and protocols; troubleshoot network problems; and support the creation of virtualized networks. This class is continuation of the IT Credentials and Cybersecurity track for the students who complete the A+ Certification course or those who already hold A+ Certification or have equivalent knowledge and experience.

Held online on Tuesdays-Thursdays, May 10-Aug 11 from 6-9 p.m. “CompTIA Network+ Certification Prep” will cost $185 plus the cost of courseware ($129).
