SCC Personal Enrichment Classes Beginning in October

LLI Logo C-01The Lifelong Learning Institute at Sandhills Community College offers adults the opportunity to actively engage your mind through a variety of personal enrichment course offerings. Whether you are looking to challenge yourself with a new skill or deepen your understanding of a particular topic, SCC’s Lifelong Learning Institute can help you reach your personal goals in order to achieve a more intellectually rewarding life.
Learn how to properly and efficiently use your kitchen tools to make preparing healthy meals feel less like a chore in the new course, “Buddha Bowl Express.” The course led by Chef Angela Webb teaches basic knife skills to enhance the look and taste of your culinary creations. You will gain hands-on experience learning to master the basic cuts while making a delicious Buddha bowl for lunch. This is a fast and delicious way to blend regional flavor profiles together. We will also taste and smell an array of herbs and spices and learn how to pair and combine to customize this meal for a quick, simple and healthy weeknight meal. You must wear long pants or skirt, long sleeved shirts, non-slip closed toed shoes (sneakers OK) and loose hair securely pulled back.
“Buddha Bowl Express” will be held on Monday, Oct. 2 from 9-Noon. The cost is $75.
The 4-week exploration of cinema, “From Scribe to Script: Adapting Fiction to Film” is a new course that considers the perilous journey from fiction to film. When a director dares render beloved fictional works as visual interpretations in a darkened cinema, he or she knows that the path from words to images is the most dangerous journey of all. Join us in the dark as we shed light on some of those perilous adaptations.
“From Scribe to Script: Adapting Fiction to Film” will be held Oct. 10-31 on Tuesdays from 2-4:30 p.m. The cost is $25.
“Financial Decision Making for Retirees,” taught by Certified Senior Advisor, Noelle Granville, covers investment and estate planning, income tax reduction and insurance planning, proper portfolio balance to reduce investment risk, getting more income from investments, reducing probate costs and long-term care planning.
“Financial Decision Making for Retirees,” will be held Oct. 3-31 on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m. The cost is $20.
In the session, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Family of Donors,” we will discuss the importance of cross-departmental collaboration within the organization in order to build and sustain a base of annual donors. From musicians to box office associates, everyone at the North Carolina Symphony plays a significant role in the fundraising process.
“It Takes a Village to Raise a Family of Donors,” will take place Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 10:30-Noon. This session is free but registration is required.
“Fall Book Club” will meet on the third Friday of each month, Aug. 18 – Nov. 17 from 2 – 4 p.m. in the Wood Reading Room in Boyd Library. In October, Daisy Miller a novel by Henry James will be discussed. The book club is free but registration is required.
The new course, “Art in the Shadow of the Great War” presents three lectures that trace a shift from the adventurous pre-war paintings of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, his fellow Cubists, and the Italian Futurists, to styles that were figurative and classical in response to a moralistic and conservative cultural climate. When World War I was declared in August, 1914, the lights dimmed in the studios and cafes throughout Paris, where artists from Spain, Italy, and France together had created the founding works in that bold experiment known as modern art. Artists were vulnerable, whether they became soldiers or remained in the city under fear of reprisals for being foreigners or Jews, but art continued to be made.  After the war French artists continued to be inspired by the art of antiquity, which offered an ideal of beauty and a vehicle for mourning the devastation of war.
“Art in the Shadow of the Great War” will be held on Tuesdays from Oct. 24-Nov. 7 from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $25.
Award-winning author and storyteller, Randell Jones, returns this fall to share intriguing stories from the remarkable life of Daniel Boone, in the new class, “In the Footsteps of Daniel Boone.” As an American pioneer hero –a frontier guide, wilderness scout, expert marksman, Indian fighter, militia leader, judge, sheriff, coroner, elected legislator, prisoner of war, Spanish syndic, and husband and father, Boone’s eventful life is an important part of North Carolina’s heritage, and a history that every American should know. Books available for sale.
“In the Footsteps of Daniel Boone” will be held Tuesday, Oct 3 from 10-11:30 a.m. The cost is $25.
Travel back in time during this new four session course, “The Art of Living, America in 1963,” as a visiting artist/scholar provides a unique glimpse of one aspect of American culture in 1963. Kennedy, King, the Mercury Space Program, the Beatles—1963 might well be called “The Year That Changed America.” Join us, as we look at the music, art, film, and literature that changed us from the post-WWII/ Korean industrial juggernaut to the social media/IT-driven nation we are today. There will be a special guest presenter each week. $44
“The Art of Living, America in 1963” will be held on Thursdays, Oct. 5, 19 and Nov. 2, 16 from 2:30-5:30 p.m.
The new class, “How Select Historians View the Holocaust,” explores questions such as, Was the Holocaust a brutally primitive form of social mobility and Was Anti-Semitism the driving force behind the Holocaust? Can the Holocaust be explained through the story of ordinary men in Police Battalion 101? Did Soviet Russian policy from 1939 to 1941 contribute to the effectiveness of the Nazi policy of genocide? Such questions will provide a path through the complexities of the Holocaust and, hopefully, remind students that in the center of the heart of darkness we find ourselves.
“How Select Historians View the Holocaust” will be held on Thursdays, Oct. 12-Nov. 9 from 7-8:30 p.m. The cost is $25.
