The League of Women Voters of Moore County presents Dynamic Dialogues on Democracy
November 17 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The League of Women Voters of Moore County (LWVMC) is pleased to announce its third in a series of Dynamic Dialogues on Democracy to be held on Wednesday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. in person at Sandhills Community College and via Zoom. The issue will be The Electoral College: Should It Stay or Should It Go.
This event — the League’s first in-person event in nearly two years — will be held at the McPherson Theater at the Bradshaw Performing Arts Center at Sandhills Community College, located at 3395 Airport Road, Pinehurst, NC. The college’s procedures for COVID protection will be followed. Space is limited so please RSVP to email@example.com. Or join via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83229421785?pwd=bWdwZ0FHUHZsL0hmeEpsb0Z3OHNUQT09. Meeting ID: 832 2942 1785 Passcode: 389612.
The League is honored to have Dr. John Dempsey, President of Sandhills Community College, as guest speaker for this event. A highly-regarded expert on American Government and the U.S. Constitution, Dr. Dempsey will present both sides of this hotly-debated topic and help attendees decide if it’s time to abolish the Electoral College, to make changes to it or simply to leave it alone. “Regardless of your position on the issue, this is sure to be a thought-provoking, stimulating presentation for all attending,” said Joan Matula, co-president LWVMC.
The League has invited members of the Pinecrest High School Debate Team, once again, to help frame the topic of this dynamic dialogue by providing background on the Electoral College and its use through our nation’s history. The students’ input may show that the Electoral College distorts the democratic process, as many believe, or it may show that it is the very definition of American electoral democracy. They may demonstrate that the Electoral College no longer serves its original purposes and yet, with so many problems facing our nation, reforming it does not rank high among them.
LWVMC co-president, Peggy Crawford noted, “The League’s mission is to empower voters and defend democracy. What better way to do that than by having Dr. Dempsey and the PHS Debate Team help educate us on a confusing, controversial and critical election topic — the Electoral College. Please join us to learn more”
Dynamic Dialogues on Democracy is a series of open conversations about important issues facing our democracy, sponsored by the LWVMC. The 2021 series includes three dialogues: Fair Congressional Districts (April) , Amendments and the Constitution (September), and the
Electoral College (November). Each event includes a brief history lesson on the issue, followed by debate and Q & A. All events are nonpartisan and guidelines for civil discourse are followed.
This event is open to the public and free of charge but you must pre-register or use the Zoom link (provided above) to participate. For more information, visit https://www.lwvmc.org/
