Creative Living Classes to Begin in August at SCC

Whether you’re looking to challenge yourself by taking a new class or deepen your understanding of a particular topic, Sandhills Community College’s Center for Creative Living can help you reach your personal goals in order to achieve a more intellectually rewarding life.

Culinary Club

Italian buttercream and Austrian hazelnut torte say it all. In “European Tortes,” Chef Brunner shares his grandmother’s recipes for making several cakes using various mixing methods. Students will bake and finish their cake to take home as a manifest of their baking talent. This class will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20 and Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 4-7 p.m. The cost is $150.

In “Gnocchi” students will learn to make two types of authentic Italian gnocchi, Potato Gnocchi and Ricotta Gnocchi, and how to make a sweet potato base. This class will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 5-7 p.m. The cost is $75.

Students will learn to bake without gluten or with gluten substitutes in “Gluten Free Baking” and make an incredible tasting pizza dough and cookies. This class will be held on Friday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The cost is $75.


Watercolor basics, including the four main components, paper, paint brushes, and water are all highlighted in “Investigating Watercolor.” Techniques to control and work with water are demonstrated. Designed for beginners or those with limited experience, this 4-week class will cover a new area starting with a still life, floral, landscape and “bring your own photo” landscape. Techniques for flowers, trees, rocks, and skies will be demonstrated.

“Investigating Watercolor” will be held on Thursdays, Aug. 15-Sept. 5 from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $45.


Students will learn about yoga practice and all of its benefits. “Explore Yoga” is both informative and engaging and designed for all levels. Students will develop a safe physical practice and learn how the physical aspect is just one component of the mind-body connection. Learn stress reduction techniques, develop strength, and gain flexibility. Students should bring their own mat.

“Explore Yoga” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 19-Dec. 11 from 9-10:30 a.m. A second class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 20-Dec. 12 from 5:30-7 p.m. The cost is $145.

“AcroYoga” is a physical practice combining yoga and acrobatics in order to create community through beautiful and balanced routines with partners and groups. The practice includes a dynamic solar side as well as a healing therapeutic lunar side. No experience or partner is necessary. This is a beginner course but open to all levels.

“AcroYoga” will be held on Mondays, Aug. 19-Dec. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost is $104.

Learn tools to a regular meditation practice in “Meditation Exploration.” Students will calm their body, mind, and soul while finding awareness of their true being. This class will be held on Fridays, Aug. 23-Dec. 13 from 8:30-10 a.m. The cost is $85.

Tai Chi is a fun, non-competitive activity for all ages combining movement, relaxation and breathing to increase and enhance the flow of energy in the body, to improve balance and reduce stress to improve circulation and enhance both physical and mental well-being. Students will learn and practice the basic postures of the Tai Chi 24 Form/Beijing Form in “Tai Chi Basics.”

“Tai Chi Basics” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 27-Dec. 12 from 4-5 p.m. The cost is $145.

“Tai Chi Practice” continues to improve and refine postures learned in “Tai Chi Basics” and adds various Qi Gong exercises for enhanced stress reduction and improved wellness. The class provides a time and place for like-minded people to gather and practice the Beijing Form. Working knowledge of the Beijing Form is required.

“Tai Chi Practice” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 27-Dec. 12 from 3-4 p.m. The cost is $145.


In “Financial 101: Back to Basics,” students will focus on financial topics building a baseline understanding of investment economic terms and definitions. Topics include budget and healthy spending, how to create a sustainable annual budget, benefits of a college savings plan and how to maximize and create employer-sponsored retirement plans. Students will discover the value of basic financial instruments: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, life insurance, long-term care, and annuities.

“Financial 101: Back to Basics” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 20-27 from 6-7:30 p.m. The cost is $25.


“Sign Language for Beginners” is an introduction to Sign Language used in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. Whether using in the workplace or for personal, students will learn to build vocabulary, understand how a sign is formed, and learn the language of everyday conversation including fingerspelling and the importance of facial expression in conveying a message through non-verbal communication.

“Sign Language for Beginners” will be held on Tuesdays, Aug. 20-Oct. 15 from 6-8 p.m. The cost is $75.

“French Beginning Conversation” covers asking and responding to simple questions using basic vocabulary. Students will engage in simple conversations and interact in social, business, and travel situations. Students will read a variety of basic written materials and learn to write simple sentences needed in everyday life.

“French Beginning Conversation” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 21-Sept. 25 from 6-8 p.m. The cost is $75 plus the cost of text.
