Career Training Classes to Begin at SCC in February

Two people reading a blueprint.The Sandhills Community College Continuing Education Career Training division has plenty of options to help you gain credentials to enhance your current career, and the resources to assist you in beginning a new one. This February, keep your Nurse Aid listing up to date, gain real estate education credentials, expand your construction education, or earn automotive certifications.

These classes require face-to-face interaction CDC recommendations and precautions for a safe environment will be stringently followed. The number of students in a classroom has been reduced to allow for distancing and students are required to wear a face/mouth covering when on campus.

Hybrid classes are a combination of online and face-to-face instruction.

Health Care Occupations

“Nurse Aid, Level 1 Refresher” is for those whose listing has expired on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry.

Eligible individuals must have completed a state-approved Nurse Aide I program and have a certificate or transcript supporting completion. Or for individuals with a state-recognized or military healthcare credential. Contact Jenell Powell at 695-3965 for enrollment approval.

Held Thursdays and Fridays, Feb. 12, 19, 25 and 28 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the hybrid class “Nurse Aid, Level 1 Refresher” will cost $130.

Real Estate

“Real Estate Pre-Licensing” provides an intensive review of topics and prepares the student for the NC Broker licensing examination. Topics covered include real estate terms, contracts, leases, ownership, licensing law, finance, listing and closing of property, property valuation and building construction.

The prerequisite for this class is Work Keys Reading and Math, Level 5 or higher or verification of a post-secondary degree.

Held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 8-May 5 from 6-9 p.m., “Real Estate Post-Licensing 302 Contracts and Closings” will cost $185 plus the cost of text.


In “Blueprint Reading” students will learn techniques for reading and using construction drawings and specifications with an emphasis on drawings and information relevant to the carpentry trade. Introduces quantity takeoffs and how to read and interpret a set of commercial drawings and specifications.

Held on Saturdays, Feb. 6 and 20, and March 6 and 10 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., “Blueprint Reading” will cost $75 plus the cost of text.


Successful completion of “Auto Safety Inspection” certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is a valid driver’s license. Held on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8 and 9 from 6-10 p.m., “Auto Safety Inspection” will cost $75.

“Escort Vehicle Operator Certification” meets the training requirements set by the NC Department of Transportation to certify oversize-overweight load escort vehicle drivers. Course components consist of defensive driving, escort driver requirements, skills training, and an exam. Students must have a valid driver’s license without restrictions other than use of corrective lens, must not have a DWI or reckless driving within the previous 12 months, and must be 21-years of age (can be 18 with a Class A commercial driver’s license). All initial applicants must complete a 2- or 4-hour defensive driving course that has been approved by the National Safety Council. (This can be done after this class.) Classes can be found at:

Held on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., “Escort Vehicle Operator Certification” will cost $75.

The Sandhills Community College Continuing Education team can customize courses to meet the specific needs of a business or industry, provide resources to assist in developing new training initiatives or to maintain and support current efforts. Seats are still available for these classes. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Pre-register at Pre-registrations must be made two days before class starts.

Campus Health Precautions

For the continued safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff, the college has converted as many classes as possible to online or hybrid (online plus limited face-to-face interaction). Additional hand sanitizing stations have been installed on campus and a deep cleaning is being carried out each evening using EPA-approved disinfectants and foggers. A campus-wide sanitizing wipe down of door pulls and light switches is done twice each weekday and the use of water fountains has been discontinued. Service desk shields have been installed in high traffic areas.
