Career Training Classes to Begin at SCC in August

If you’re looking for a sign to take the first step towards a new career, here it is. Several classes are being offered this August in healthcare, business, automotive, industry, and human services. The Continuing Education Career Training department at Sandhills Community College is a perfect local resource for adult learners who want to improve workplace skills, achieve job certification or recertification, improve employment marketability, or explore new opportunities.

Industry

“Construction Project Supervisor” provides students with the skills necessary to work as a construction supervisor or job foreman. Students will learn management skills in problem solving, planning, estimating, safety supervision, scheduling, controlling costs and resources, and, perhaps most important, managing people. The prerequisite for this class is two years of previous construction experience. Scholarships are available.

“Construction Project Supervisor” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 20-Dec. 10 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $185 plus the cost of text.

Healthcare

Medical Administrative Assistants are valuable members of the healthcare team handling a broad range of duties, including patient registration, telephone, scheduling, medical records, accounts receivable, data entry, and medical claims. In “Medical Administrative Assistant” studies will prepare for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

“Medical Administrative Assistant” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 5-Dec. 11 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $255 plus the cost of text.

“Central Sterile Processing” introduces the primary responsibilities of a central sterile technician and practical applications of learned concepts and procedures. Students will explore preparation, storage, distribution of instruments, supplies, and equipment, quality assurance and inventory management. Upon completion, students will be able to apply the principles of sterilization/disinfection in the workplace, as well as the principles of distribution of instruments/supplies. This class prepares students for the Sterile Processing Technician certification.

“Central Sterile Processing” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 19-Dec. 16 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $185 plus the cost of text.

In “EKG Technician” students will learn the required skills to become a certified EKG Technician and work in a variety of healthcare settings. Topics include cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiac cycle, EKG strip analysis, 12 lead EKG, and EKG procedures. This class prepares students for the EKG certification with ASPT.

“EKG Technician” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 19-Dec. 16 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $185 plus the cost of the text.

Prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and for entry-level employment in “Pharmacy Technician.” Topics include technical procedures for preparing and dispensing prescriptions, packaging and labeling, controlled substance procedures, inventory control, pharmacy calculations, and over-the-counter drugs. Upon completion, students will be able to perform basic supervised dispensing techniques in a community pharmacy setting.

“Pharmacy Technician” will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 20-Dec. 10 from 6-9:30 p.m. The cost is $185 plus the cost of text.

In “Phlebotomy Technician & Clinical Rotation” students will learn the skills necessary to draw blood specimens in various healthcare settings and blood donation centers. Topics include venipuncture, specimen handling, record-keeping, and the healthcare profession. A Work Keys Reading for Information test, drug screening, background check, and current immunizations are required for registration. “Phlebotomy Technician & Clinical Rotation” will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 20-Dec. 12 from 6-9:30 p.m. Clinical hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and there will be one Saturday class from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The cost is $205.50 plus the cost of text.

“Nurse Aide Level 1” prepares students for work under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals in performing hands-on patient care. The course includes preparation for the State Board examination for NC NA Registry listing. “Nurse Aide Level 1” will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 21-Dec. 16 from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m, with lab hours 2-4 p.m. and clinical hours 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The cost is $205.50 plus the cost of the text.

Automotive

“Escort Vehicle Operator Certification” meets the training requirements set by the NC Department of Transportation to certify Oversize-Overweight load escort vehicle drivers. Course components consist of defensive driving, escort driver requirements, skills training, and an exam. Must have a valid driver’s license without restrictions other than the use of a corrective lens. Must not have a DWI or reckless driving within the previous 12 months. Must be 21 years of age. Can be 18 with a Class A commercial driver’s license. This class will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $75.

Successful completion of “Auto Safety Inspection” certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is a valid driver’s license. This class will be held on Monday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 6-10 p.m. The cost is $75.

“OBD Emissions Control Inspection” certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles OBD Emissions Control Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is “Certified Auto Safety Inspection.” This is also the Recertification class. This class will be held on Monday, Aug. 26 and Tuesdays, Aug. 27 from 6-10 p.m. The cost is $75.

Business

A notary public is officially authorized to witness signatures on legal documents, collect sworn statements, and administer oaths. This class will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13 and Thursday, Aug. 15 from 5:30-9 p.m. The cost is $75.

Human Services

Students will explore a variety of skills associated with the Income Maintenance Caseworker role to determine service eligibility in “Income Maintenance Caseworker.” Specific focus includes proficiency in the utilization of the NCFAST application. Other topics are skills in communication, interviewing, time management, data gathering/compiling, and data analysis. This class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 20-Oct. 10 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $130.

Teambuilding

The “Sandhills High Adventure Ropes Course” will guide participants through physical and mental challenges, which promote creative, productive, and motivated teams. It will challenge participants to succeed in team building, self-motivation, problem-solving, decision-making, and effective communication. Prior registration required. Must be at least 16 years old. Waiver and medical release forms required. Parents need to sign for participants under 18. Email degrel@sandhills.edu for forms. You can also schedule your own private group adventure. Customized Training for Business and Industry

The Sandhills Community College Continuing Education team can customize courses to meet the specific needs of a business or industry, provide resources to assist in developing new training initiatives or to maintain and support current efforts. Courses can be held at convenient times for you and your staff at any SCC location, your business, or other convenient locations.

Seats are still available for these classes. To register in person, stop by the Sandhills Community College Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall. You may also register by phone with a credit card at (910) 695-3980. Registration hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
