Career Training Class Begin in August at SCC

forklift.jpegThe Continuing Education Career Training program is a perfect local resource for adult learners who want to improve workplace skills, achieve job certification or recertification, improve employment marketability or explore new opportunities. Fall brings a variety of classes to enrich your professional development.
Health Care Occupations
Learn required skills to become a certified “EKG Technician” and work in a variety of healthcare settings. Topics include cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiac cycle, EKG strip analysis, 12 lead EKG, and EKG procedures. The cost is $185 plus the cost of text.
“EKG Technician” will be held Aug. 21 – Dec. 13 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 – 9:00 p.m.
“Nurse Aide, Level 1” is a state-certified program that will prepare students for work under the supervision of licensed health care professionals in performing hands-on patient care. The course includes preparation for the State Board examination for NC NA Registry listing. Please contact Jenell Powell at 695-3965 for program information. The cost of the course is $205.50 plus the cost of the course text.
“Nurse Aide, Level 1” will be held at St. Joseph of the Pines Aug. 16 – Dec. 13 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Lab will be held from 2 – 4 p.m. after class.
“Nurse Aide, Level 2 Competency” is designed to assess the NA II skills identified on the NA II Task List. After the Nurse Aide II is determined competent in the required skills, one can be placed back on the North Carolina Board of Nursing NA II Registry. “Nurse Aide, Level 2 Competency” will be given on the Pinehurst Campus Friday, Aug. 25 from 8:30 am – 3 pm and the cost is $75.
The “Pharmacy Technician” course is designed to prepare students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and for entry-level employment. Topics include technical procedures for preparing and dispensing prescriptions, packaging and labeling, controlled substance procedures, inventory control, pharmacy calculations, and over-the-counter drugs. Upon completion, students will be able to perform basic supervised dispensing techniques in a community pharmacy setting.
“Pharmacy Technician” will be held Aug. 24 – Dec. 14 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9:30 p.m. The cost is $185 plus text.
“Phlebotomy Technician and Clinical Rotation” will teach students the skills necessary to draw blood specimens in various healthcare settings and blood donation centers. Topics include venipuncture, specimen handling, recordkeeping, and the healthcare profession. A Work Keys Reading for Information test, drug screening, background check, and current immunizations are required for registration. Please email for a complete list of program requirements. The cost is $205.50 plus the cost of text.
A “Phlebotomy Technician and Clinical Rotation” class will be held Aug. 17 – Dec. 14 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9 p.m.
Successful completion of the “Auto Safety Inspection” course will certify students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. Must have a valid driver’s license.
“Auto Safety Inspection” will be held Aug. 7 and 8 from 6 – 10 p.m. The cost is $75.00.
Successful completion of the “OBD Emissions Control Inspection” course will certify students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles OBD Emissions Control Inspection Law. Students must be Certified in Auto Safety Inspection. This is also the Recertification class.
The “OBD Emissions Control Inspection” will meet Aug. 14 and 15 from 6 – 10 p.m. The cost is $75.
“Alarm Security Technician” introduces the operation and skill standards for the alarm industry. Topics focus on the installation, programming, maintenance, and repair of alarm system wiring and equipment per applicable code, implementation of logical testing procedure for identifying system faults, and understanding general building construction. Upon completion, you will have the knowledge to sit for a national certification exam as an Alarm Security Technician. A clean criminal background is required to work in this field.
“Alarm Security Technician” will be held Aug. 3 – Dec. 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9 p.m. The cost is $185.
“HVAC: Heating & Air Conditioning” is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to become employed as a heating and air conditioning technician. Course topics focus on operating principles of heating and cooling systems with emphasis on safety, theory and principles of refrigeration, types of heating/cooling systems, Ohm’s law, load calculation, troubleshooting using the various types of test equipment, servicing, repairing and installing components/entire systems and employment of customer service techniques.
“HVAC: Heating & Air Conditioning” will be held at Moore County Homebuilders in Aberdeen and the cost is $185. The class will be Aug. 15 – May 15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9 p.m. and three Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Seats are still available for these classes. To register in person, stop by the Sandhills Community College Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall. You may also register by phone with a credit card at (910) 695-3980. Registration hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
