ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Catherine Colter

Photo of Catherine Coulter.“Walking into my very first college class at 8 a.m. to a gentleman in a bowtie quoting the Pussycat Dolls, needless to say, I wanted to stick around to see what he was going to do next,” recalled SCC graduate Catherine Colter.

She was speaking of her instructor, Ray Linville. “Mr. Linville taught me that great grammar and punctuation can take you a long way. Also, that there are people out there who want you to succeed and are willing to help you along the way.”

Catherine graduated with her Associates of Arts degree in Medical Office Administration and Office Administration in 2012. She began her career checking in patients at Pinehurst Surgical Clinic. “Since that time, I have had the opportunity to work with some great people, skilled physicians, and companies that lead me to where I am today.”

Catherine now works as a corporate physician billing and compliance specialist with FirstHealth. In March of 2018, she earned her certification in Medical Billing and Coding. In her position at FirstHealth, she completed her second certification in December 2019 and is now a Certified Evaluation and Management Coder. She hopes to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration at East Carolina University.

With such success in her career field, we asked what advice Catherine has for students. “Hard work and determination can take you a long way,” she answered. “Do not be afraid of failure, rejection, or chasing your goals. Your Associate degree can take you much farther than you can imagine with hard work and dedication.”

We’re looking forward to seeing what comes next for Catherine.
