5.4.4 Retirement

Faculty and staff should notify the Office of the President of their retirement in writing no later than 120 days prior to the effective retirement date. Application for retirement must be made through the ORBIT website for the NC Retirement System. 

An application must be filed with the Retirement System at least 90 days but not more than 120 days before the effective date of retirement. The effective date of retirement is always the first day of a month. The Human Resources Office recommends that application be made at least 90 days prior to the planned retirement date in order to ensure timely payment of the first retirement check.

Prospective retirees should observe the following procedures:

  1. File an application (Form 6) through the ORBIT Website no earlier than 120 days in advance of the retirement effective date (60 days in advance is required to ensure payment being made the effective date of retirement).
  2. The State Retirement System will acknowledge to the employee receipt of the application and communicate completion steps through the ORBIT website.
  3. The employee will receive a sheet from the State Retirement System giving the options and the estimated benefit amount, and a Form 6E should be completed to designate the chosen option.
