2.8.1 Social Security Number Protection

2.8.1 Social Security Number Protection

Revised: October 1, 2012; October 1, 2018

The college will collect data for state and federal reporting and other purposes as required by law. These data include but are not limited to background checks, reporting of financial aid and reporting of student employment and benefits.

Students’ social security numbers will not be used by college personnel to identify students for normal student processes. For admission purposes, the social security number is not the ID number; a unique ID # is generated upon admission to the college. For foreign students, or other individual applicants/students who do not have a social security number, a unique ID will be assigned to identify the student. Name lookup in the system for accessing the student record, would still be appropriate in these cases.

Employee social security numbers will not be used for identification purposes.  A similar unique ID# that is generated upon employment will be assigned to identify the employee.
