Associate in Science Degree (A10400) Curriculum Standard

The Associate in Science degree is recommended for students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges or universities to pursue programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. Community college graduates who have earned 65 semester hours of academic credit in approved transfer courses with a grade of "C" or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale will receive at least 64 semester hours of academic credit upon admission to a UNC-System university through the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. Courses may also transfer through transfer agreements with independent colleges and universities.

GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (44 Semester Hours Credit)
The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and the fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers. Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language and/or health and physical education requirements, if applicable, prior to or after transfer to the senior institution.

English Composition (6 SHC)
ENG 111 and one of the following: ENG 112, ENG 113, ENG 114

Humanities/Fine Arts (9 SHC)
Nine semester hours from three of the following discipline areas are required. At least one course must be a literature course. One 3 SHC speech/communication course may be substituted for one 3 SHC humanities/fine arts course except literature.

Social/Behavioral Sciences (9 SHC)
Nine semester hours from three of the following discipline areas are required. At least one course must be a history course.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics (20 SHC):

Natural Sciences (8 SHC minimum): Select a minimum of a two-course sequence, including accompanying laboratory work, from among the biological and physical science disciplines.

Mathematics (6 SHC minimum): Select at least one 200-level course and one other course from the following courses. One course in mathematics at the precalculus algebra level or above is required; the other course(s) may be higher level mathematics or may be selected from among other quantitative subjects, such as computer science and statistics.

Other Science and Mathematics (6 SHC minimum): Select an additional 6 SHC from Natural Science/Mathematics general education transfer courses.

Academic Related (1 SHC)

  • ACA 122 College Transfer Success (1 SHC)

Physical Education (2 SHC): Select two activity courses with a PED prefix. (PED 110 is NOT an activity course.)

Choose another 18 hours from:

  • Natural Sciences/Mathematics: A minimum of 14 SHC of college transfer courses in mathematics, natural sciences or computer science.
  • Courses required for transfer to one of the sixteen branches of the University of NC system with junior status in a major field of study, as specified in approved pre-major agreements.
  • Any course approved for transfer under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement.
