
BIOLOGY AND BIOLOGY EDUCATION (A1040A)
GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (46 Semester Hours Credit)* Forty-four semester hours of credit in General Education Core courses are required as outlined on the NCCCS Curriculum Standards for Associate in Science degree programs. The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers.
English Composition (6 SHC) Two English composition courses are required.
- ENG 111, Expository Writing, is required as the first composition course.
- The second composition course must be selected from the following:
- ENG 112: Argument-based Research
- ENG 114: Professional Research and Reporting
Humanities/Fine Arts (9 SHC**) Three courses from three discipline areas are required.
- One course must be a literature course.
- Two additional courses from the following discipline areas are required: art, drama, dance, foreign languages, interdisciplinary humanities, music, philosophy, and religion.

- One of the following courses is required:
- Mathematics (6 SHC minimum): Select at least one 200-level course and one other course from the following courses. One course in mathematics at the precalculus algebra level or above is required; the other course(s) may be higher level mathematics or may be selected from among other quantitative subjects, such as computer science and statistics.
- Other Science and Mathematics (6 SHC minimum): Select an additional 6 SHC from Natural Science/Mathematics general education transfer courses.
Other Required Hours (18-19 SHC)* One semester hour of credit may be included in a sixty-five semester hour credit Associate in Science program. The transfer of the 65th hour is not guaranteed. A minimum of 18 SHC of college transfer courses in general education, pre-major or elective courses are required.

- Physical Education (2 SHC) activity courses are required at Sandhills Community College. - One of the following sequences of courses is recommended (8 SHC):
- CHM 251 and 252: Organic Chemistry I & II (8 SHC) or
- PHY 151 and 152: College Physics I & II (8 SHC) or
- PHY 251 and 252: General Physics I & II (8 SHC), but only if the student has placed into MAT 272 (Calculus II)
- Four hours of approved biology college transfer courses are recommended (4 SHC):
- BIO 112: General Biology II (4 SHC)
- BIO 120: Introductory Botany (4 SHC)
- BIO 130: Introductory Zoology (4 SHC)
Application to a University
Admission applications vary; students must meet the deadline for the university to which they plan to transfer. Upon successful completion of the Associate in Science degree, students who meet the requirements outlined in this pre-major articulation agreement will be eligible to be considered for admission as juniors to the universities offering the baccalaureate degree:
- Biology: ASU, ECU, ECSU, FSU, NC A&T, NCCU, NCSU, UNC-A, UNC-CH, UNC-C, UNC-G, UNC-P, UNC-W, WCU, WSSU
- Biology Education, Secondary Education: ASU, ECSU, FSU, NC A&T, NCCU, NCSU, UNC-A [Certification for Grades K-4; Middle Grades (4-6); Grades 6-9; Secondary Level], UNC-P, UNC-W, WCU
Admission to the Major
Grade point average requirements vary and admission is competitive across the several programs in Biology and Biology Education. Admission to teacher licensure programs requires satisfactory scores on PRAXIS I and II.
*Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language and/or health and physical education requirements, if applicable, prior to or after transfer to the senior institution.
**3 SHC in Speech/Communication may be substituted for 3 SHC in Humanities/Fine Arts. Speech/Communication may not substitute for the literature requirement. [COM 110, 120, 231]
