Associate in Arts Degree (A10100) Curriculum Standard

The Associate in Arts degree is recommended for students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges or universities to pursue programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Community college graduates who have earned 64 semester hours of academic credit in approved transfer courses with a grade of "C" or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale will receive at least 64 semester hours of academic credit upon admission to a UNC-System university through the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. Courses may also transfer through transfer agreements with independent colleges and universities.

GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (44 Semester Hours Credit)
The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and the fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers. Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language and/or health and physical education requirements, if applicable, prior to or after transfer to the senior institution.

English Composition (6 SHC)

Humanities/Fine Arts (12 SHC)
Select four courses from at least three of the following discipline areas. At least one course must be a literature course. One 3 SHC speech/communication course may be substituted for one 3 SHC humanities/fine arts course except literature.

Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 SHC)
Select four courses from at least three of the following discipline areas. At least one course must be a history course.

Natural Sciences (8 SHC)
Select two courses, including accompanying laboratory work, from the biological and physical science disciplines.

Mathematics (6 SHC)
Select at least one course in introductory mathematics; the other course may be selected from other quantitative subjects such as computer science and statistics.
