
SOCIAL SCIENCE SECONDARY EDUCATION (A1010M)
GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (44 Semester Hours Credit)
Forty-four semester hours of credit in General Education Core courses are required as outlined on the NCCCS Curriculum Standards for Associate in Arts degree programs. The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers.
English Composition (6 SHC) Two English composition courses are required.
- ENG 111, Expository Writing, is required as the first composition course.
- The second composition course must be selected from the following:
ENG 112: Argument-based Research
ENG 114: Professional Research and Reporting
- ENG 112 is recommended for the second composition requirement.
Humanities/Fine Arts (12 SHC)
Four courses from three discipline areas are required. At least one course must be a literature course. One 3 SHC speech communication course may be substituted for one 3 SHC humanities/fine arts course except literature.
- Select the required literature course and one additional course from the following:
- Art (ART 111, 114, 115)

- Foreign Languages (FRE 111, 112, 211, 212; SPA 111, 112, 211, 212)

Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 SHC)
Four courses from three discipline areas are required.
- One of the following course sequences is required (6 SHC):
- HIS 111 and 112: World Civilizations I (3 SHC) and II (3 SHC) or
- HIS 121 and 122: Western Civilization I (3 SHC) and II (3 SHC)
- HIS 111 and 112 are recommended.
- The following courses are required (6 SHC):
- POL 120: American Government (3 SHC)
- SOC 210: Introduction to Sociology (3 SHC)
Natural Sciences/Mathematics (14 SHC)
- Natural Sciences (8 SHC): Select two courses, including accompanying laboratory work, from among the following biological and physical science disciplines:
- Astronomy (AST 111 [class] and 111A [lab])
- Biology (BIO 110, 111, 112, 120, 130, 140 [class] and 140A [lab])
- Chemistry (CHM 151, 152)
- Physics (PHY 110 [class] and 110A [lab], 151, 152, 251, 252)
- Mathematics (6 SHC): Select at least one course in introductory mathematics (college algebra, trigonometry, calculus, etc.); the other unit may be selected from among other quantitative subjects, such as computer science and statistics.
OTHER REQUIRED HOURS (20 Semester Hours Credit)
- Academic Related (1 SHC): ACA 122 College Transfer Success (1 SHC)
- Physical Education (2 SHC) activity courses are required at Sandhills Community College. Select two courses from the following activity courses (PED 110 is not an activity course.): PED 113, 117, 118, 120, 121, 122, 123, 125, 128, 129, 130, 135, 137, 138, 139, 142, 143, 145, 147, 152, 153, 154, 156, 160, 161, 162, 163, 169, 170, 173, 174, 181, 186, 187, 212, 215, 217, 218, 260, 262
- The following courses are required (9 SHC):
- GEO 111: World Regional Geography (3 SHC)
- HIS 131: American History I (3 SHC)

- The following courses are required (6 SHC):
- ECO 251: Principles of Microeconomics (3 SHC)
- ECO 252: Principles of Macroeconomics (3 SHC)
- Three (3) additional hours of approved college transfer courses are required.
Note: Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language requirement, if applicable, prior to or after transferring to the senior institution.
Application to a University
Admission application deadlines vary; students must meet the deadline for the university to which they plan to transfer. Upon successful completion of the associate in arts degree, students who meet the requirements outlined in this pre-major articulation agreement for Social Science Secondary Education will be eligible to be considered for admission as juniors to the universities offering the baccalaureate degree: ASU, FSU, NCSU, UNC-CH, WCU.
Admission to the Major
Grade point average requirements vary and admisison is competitive across the several programs in Social Science Secondary Education. Admission to teacher licensure progams requires satisfactory scores on PRAXIS I and II.
