
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (A1010J)
GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (44 Semester Hours Credit)
Forty-four semester hours of credit in General Education Core courses are required as outlined on the NCCCS Curriculum Standards for Associate in Arts degree programs. The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers.
English Composition (6 SHC) Two English composition courses are required.
- ENG 111, Expository Writing, is required as the first composition course.
- The second composition course must be selected from the following:
ENG 112: Argument-based Research
ENG 114: Professional Research and Reporting
- ENG 112: Argument-based Research is recommended for the second course.
Humanities/Fine Arts (12 SHC)
Four courses from three discipline areas are required. At least one course must be a literature course. One 3 SHC speech communication course may be substituted for one 3 SHC humanities/fine arts course except literature.
- Select the required literature course and three additional courses from the following:
- Art (ART 111, 114, 115)
- Foreign Languages (FRE 111, 112, 211, 212; SPA 111, 112, 211, 212)
- Interdisciplinary Humanities (HUM 110, 115, 120, 122, 130, 150, 160, 161, 211, 212, 220)
- Literature (ENG 131, 231, 232, 241, 242, 261, 262)
- Music (MUS 110, 113)
- Philosophy (PHI 215, 240)
- Religion (REL 110, 111, 112, 211, 212, 221)
- Speech/Communication (COM 110, 120, 231)
- The following course is recommended to substitute for 3 SHC of Humanities/Fine Arts:
Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 SHC)
Select four courses from at least three of the following discipline areas. At least one course must be a history course.
- The following course is required (3 SHC):
- HIS 121: Western Civilization I (3 SHC) or HIS 122: Western Civilization II (3 SHC)
- The following course is recommended (3 SHC):
- PSY 150: General Psychology (3 SHC)
- Two additional courses from the following discipline areas are required (or three courses if the PSY recommendation is not followed):
- Anthropology (ANT 210, 220, 240)
- Economics (ECO 151, 251, 252)
- Geography (GEO 111)
- History (HIS 111, 112, 121, 122, 131, 132)
- Political Science (POL 120, 220)
- Psychology (PSY 150, 237, 241, 281)

Natural Sciences/Mathematics (14 SHC)
- Natural Sciences (8 SHC): Two courses from the biological and physical science disciplines, including accompanying laboratory work, are required.
- The following sequences of courses is recommended:
BIO 111 General Biology I (4 SHC) and
112: General Biology II (4 SHC)
- Mathematics (6 SHC):—The following course is recommended as the introductory mathematics course: MAT 171*: Pre-Calculus Algebra (3 SHC)
- One of the following courses is recommended for the second mathematics course:
CIS 110: Introduction to Computers (3 SHC) or
MAT 151: Statistics I (3 SHC)
OTHER REQUIRED HOURS (21 Semester Hours Credit)
- Academic Related (1 SHC): ACA 115 [Note: Beginning with the fall semester 2005, this course is required for new students to Sandhills.]
- Physical Education (2 SHC) activity courses are required at Sandhills Community College. Select two courses from the following activity courses (PED 110 is not an activity course.): PED 113, 117, 118, 120, 121, 122, 125, 127, 128, 129, 130, 135, 139, 142, 143, 145, 147, 152, 153, 154, 160, 162, 169, 170, 173, 174, 181, 186, 212, 215, 217, 260, 262
- The following course is required (2 SHC):
- PED 110: Fit and Well for Life (2 SHC)
- Sixteen (16) additional hours of approved college transfer courses are required.
Note: Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language requirement, if applicable, prior to or after transferring to the senior institution.
Application to a University
Admission application deadlines vary; students must meet the deadline for the university to which they plan to transfer. Upon successful completion of the associate in arts degree, students who meet the requirements outlined in this pre-major articulation agreement for Physical Education will be eligible to be considered for admission as juniors to the universities offering the baccalaureate degree: ASU, ECU, ECSU, FSU, NCA&T, NCCU, UNC-CH, UNC-G, UNC-P, UNC-W, WCU, WSSU.
Admission to the Major
Grade point average requirements vary and admisison is competitive across the several programs in Physcial Education. Admission to teacher licensure progams requires satisfactory scores on PRAXIS I and II.
