
HISTORY (A1010H)
GENERAL EDUCATION CORE (44 Semester Hours Credit)
Forty-four semester hours of credit in General Education Core courses are required as outlined on the NCCCS Curriculum Standards for Associate in Arts degree programs. The General Education Core includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition. Within the core, students receive opportunities to achieve competence in reading, writing, communicating, demonstrating mathematical skills, understanding science concepts, and using computers.
English Composition (6 SHC) Two English composition courses are required.
- ENG 111, Expository Writing, is required as the first composition course.
- One of the following two courses is recommended to satisfy the second composition course (3 SHC):
- ENG 112: Argument-based Research
- ENG 114: Professional Research and Reporting (3 SHC) may be selected for the second composition course.
Humanities/Fine Arts (12 SHC) Four courses from three discipline areas are required.
- At least one course must be a literature course.
- 3 SHC in Speech/Communication may be substituted for 3 SHC in Humanities/Fine Arts. Speech/Communication may not substitute for the literature requirement.
- Three additional courses from the following discipline areas are required: music, art, drama, dance, foreign languages, interdisciplinary humanities, literature, philosophy, and religion.

Four courses from three discipline areas are required.:
- One course must be a history course.
One of the following history sequences is recommended:
- HIS 111: World Civilizations I (3 SHC) and
- HIS 112: World Civilizations II (3 SHC)
or
- HIS 121: Western Civilization I (3 SHC) and
- HIS 122: Western Civilization II (3 SHC)
- Three courses from the following discipline areas are required: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology.

Natural Sciences/Mathematics (14 SHC)
- Natural Sciences (8 SHC): Two courses from the biological and physical science disciplines, including accompanying laboratory work, are required.
- Astronomy (AST 111 [class] and 111A [lab])
- Biology (BIO 110, 111, 112, 120, 130, 140 [class] and 140A [lab])
- Chemistry (CHM 151, 152)
- Physics (PHY 110 [class] and 110A [lab], 151, 152, 251, 252)
- Mathematics (6 SHC): Two courses are required.
- MAT 171 (or higher) College Algebra (3 SHC)
- The second course may be a higher level mathematics course ( 172 or 175; 263; 271; 272; 273) or may be selected from among other quantitative subjects, such as computer science ( CIS 110, CIS 115) and statistics ( MAT 151).
OTHER REQUIRED HOURS (20-21 Semester Hours Credit)
- Academic Related (1 SHC): ACA 115 [Note: Beginning with the fall semester 2005, this course is required for new students to Sandhills.]
- Physical Education (2 SHC) activity courses are required at Sandhills Community College. Select two courses from the following activity courses (PED 110 is not an activity course.): PED 113, 117, 118, 120, 121, 122, 125, 127, 128, 129, 130, 135, 139, 142, 143, 145, 147, 152, 153, 154, 160, 162, 169, 170, 173, 174, 181, 186, 212, 215, 217, 260, 262
- Eighteen-nineteen (18-19) additional hours of approved college transfer courses are required. To satisfy this requirement, two of the following courses are recommended:
- HIS 131: American History I (3 SHC)
- HIS 132: American History II (3 SHC)
Note: Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language requirement, if applicable, prior to or after transferring to the senior institution.
