The Federal Pell Grant Program
The Federal Pell Grant Program is the largest federal student financial aid program. Pell grants are awarded to help undergraduates that are in curriculum programs pay for their education after high school. These grants do not have to be repaid as long as the student completes the semester. For many students these grants provide a foundation of financial aid to which aid from other federal and non-federal sources may be added. To apply for a Federal Pell Grant, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . The grant amount is determined by the federal government and awarded based on need. Students must complete the financial aid process prior to their last date of attendance in an academic year.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are awarded to help students pay for their post-secondary education. These grants are for undergraduates with exceptional financial need (with priority given to Pell Grant recipients) and do not have to be repaid as long as the student completes the semester. Candidates for this grant are selected from applicants for the FAFSA. Students must complete the financial aid process prior to their last date of attendance in an academic year.
North Carolina Community College Grant and North Carolina Student Incentive Grant
The North Carolina Community College Grant follows the same guidelines as the Federal Pell Grant Program. You do not have to be eligible for Pell Grant to be eligible for NCCCG. Candidates for this grant are selected from applicants from the FAFSA. NCCCG is only available during the fall and/or spring semesters. Having your application processed by this date does not guarantee you will be awarded the grant. The grant is awarded on a first come first serve basis. The North Carolina Student Incentive Grant is a grant awarded by the state to the neediest students. Candidates for this grant are selected from applicants that have their FAFSA processed by March 15th.
NC Education Lottery Scholarship and the Education Access Rewards North Carolina Scholars Fund
The NC Education Lottery Scholarship and the Education Access Rewards North Carolina Scholars Fund (EARN) provides grants to certain eligible NC resident students. Candidates for these funds are selected from applicants for the FAFSA, and must meet certain eligibility requirements based on need and EFC. These funds are available Fall and Spring semesters only.
Federal College Work Study And Community Service
The Federal College Work-Study (FWS) Campus Based Program provides jobs for students who need additional financial aid. FWS gives the student a chance to earn money to pay for his/her educational expenses. Jobs are available both on and off campus on a first come, first serve basis. FWS students may work from 4 to 20 hours a week at a rate determined by the institution, averaging around 10 hours per week. After federal aid eligibility has been determined, the student may come by the financial aid office to complete a Work-Study Application. You must take at least 6 credit hours to participate in the Work-Study program. Students will be "matched" to an available position on campus or in a community service position off campus, depending on previous employment, skill, training, interest, or availability. The student will then be placed in the position and a supervisor will be assigned to monitor the work performed in the position. Work-study students are required to complete a monthly time sheet and are paid at the end of the following month. Eligible students can be placed in work-study positions up to April 1 for each academic year based upon funding and available positions. This is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience. For further information concerning the Work-Study program please contact Lynn Lupei at 695-3726
Institutional Work Study
A limited amount of Institutional work study funding is available for students who do not qualify for Federal Work Study. Procedures for applying for this program are the same as the Federal Program.
Child Care Grants
Limited child-care subsidies are available to economically disadvantaged students. An application may be obtained from the Child Care Coordinator in the Financial Aid Department. The open application period begins in June and the process of awarding child care subsidies starts in July. Applications are received on a continuing basis during the school year, and a waiting list is maintained until the following June. At that time, continuing students receiving subsidies are re-certified. Re-certification is not guaranteed. Students not receiving previous subsidies may reapply and new students may apply. A history of satisfactory academic progress (2.0 GPA) is required, and the student must maintained satisfactory academic progress to continue receiving a child-care subsidy.
Loans
Sandhills Community College does not participate in the Federal Family Education Loan program (Stafford or PLUS loans) and does not endorse the use of any particular loan program but rather encourages its students to thoroughly seek ways to fund their education through sources other than loans. If you are considering an alternative or private loan, we recommend close review of the programs available in order to select the program that best meets your needs. Things to consider:
- Note that these loans are credit-based and students are NOT guaranteed to receive them.
- Also note that under lender defined circumstances, some students may also be asked to have a co-signer or co-maker.
- Review the credit qualification criteria that you as the borrower and a co-signer or co-maker (if required) must meet to qualify.
- Review the current interest rate and fees (origination or repayment) associated with the various loan options. Keep in mind, fees can offset differences in the interest rate. Interest rates and terms vary with each lender.
- Review the repayment terms and deferment options available.
- Be sure you fully understand your responsibilities under the loan.
- Note that while the lender may contact us for verification of your enrollment status, the loan is strictly between the student and the lender.
The following education loan websites are provided for additional research into alternative loan resources. Sandhills Community College in no way recommends or endorses any specific lender or loan program:
