Admissions Policies

Sandhills Community College maintains an "open door" admission policy for both high school graduates and others who are 18 or older and who hold a high school equivalent certificate (GED) or an adult high school diploma.

Admission to associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs requires the submission of the official application form and one of the following: an official transcript indicating graduation with a diploma from a secondary program, a high school equivalency certificate (GED), or an adult high school diploma. It is the responsibility of the student to make certain these documents are sent. We have provided a Transcript Request Form in PDF and Word 97 formats which you may print and mail to your former school. The PDF documents require the Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 (free to download and use). Transcripts must be sent from the originating institution to be accepted as official documents. Word 97 and above documents can be viewed or printed using Microsoft's free Word 2003 viewer for Windows.

Applicants who are 18 or older but who do not have a high school diploma, GED, or adult high school diploma are accepted for admission to an adult basic education or high school equivalency (GED) certification program.

Admission to the college does not guarantee placement into the instructional program of the applicant's choice.

High school students enrolled in at least two high school classes, who are sixteen or older and wish to be CONCURRENTLY ENROLLED in college courses shall initiate planning for enrollment in college courses by seeking approval from high school officials. Students granted approval for concurrent enrollment must complete a college application form, submit an approval letter signed by high school officials, and obtain a satisfactory score on the college placement test (ASSET), the SAT or the ACT. Developmental courses cannot be taken by concurrently enrolled students.

Proficiency in the English language, exhibited by a TOEFL score not more than two years old of 550 on the paper-based test or 213 on the computer test, satisfactory academic records, and a local sponsor are important factors in the admission for all FOREIGN APPLICANTS seeking an F-1 student visa. Foreign applicants should contact the Office of Admissions for additional information.

Any high school graduate who does not plan to earn a degree, diploma, or certificate but wishes to enroll in a college credit course may be admitted as a SPECIAL STUDENT. Special students may register for courses if course pre-requisites are met and if space exists in the class. For admission, the special student completes an application form. A satisfactory score on the college placement test (ASSET) is required prior to enrolling in restricted college-level courses.

A VISITING STUDENT is a student pursuing a degree at another institution who takes courses at Sandhills for transfer credit. Visiting students may register for classes if course pre-requisites are met and if space exists in the class. A visiting student must submit an application and is encouraged to obtain written permission from the institution from which graduation is planned. SCC seeks to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
