Are you on your way to a satisfying career? Do you need help exploring career options?

Choosing a career that will satisfy you can sometimes be difficult and confusing. If you are unsure of what you want to do or simply want to explore career options, we invite you to contact SCC's Career Counselor, Randy Foster. You can contact him about your career needs by telephone at (910) 695-3968 or by email at fosterr@sandhills.edu.

Career counseling services available to you include a career library, computerized career exploration programs, career inventories and personality tests. These services assist you in choosing a career path that is financially rewarding and personally satisfying. Below is a description of the career counseling services available to you at Sandhills Community College.

The Career Library contains a number of books, publications, and video materials. These career resources offer job outlook forecasts, job descriptions, and salary information about a number of occupational opportunities. The resources are available for use in the Career Center during normal operating hours.

Career inventories and tests provide important information about your interests, abilities, values, likes and dislikes, and personality strengths and traits. Career inventories and tests used in the Career Center include the following assessment tools:

  • DISCOVER is a computerized career exploration program providing help as you explore career options. In using DISCOVER, you will learn how your interests, abilities, values, personality and other work experiences translate into a career choice. You may use the “Information Only” section of DISCOVER to explore several careers at once, comparing salary, national forecasts about each career's future employee needs, and educational requirements. As you use DISCOVER, you can print out the information you need to make a well-informed career decision
  • The MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR (MBTI) is a personality assessment instrument used since the 1940s as a tool for career exploration and placement. Today, it is also used in many other areas of counseling. Based upon the personality type theory of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, the MBTI is used in the Career Center to assist you in understanding how your personality preferences influence behavior, especially in career decision-making and choosing a satisfying work environment. MBTI research has yielded a wealth of information regarding how persons have unique ways of thinking and working, resulting in the creation of greater work satisfaction and higher job productivity. The MBTI is an untimed written instrument, taking approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
  • The PERSONALITY RESEARCH FORM (PRF-E) is a personality instrument assessing a much broader range of personality characteristics than does the MBTI. It consists of statements to which you respond as being true or false for you. There are no right or wrong answers. The Form E version administered at the Career Center obtains information useful to the career counselor in assessing potential work environments and employee responses to various career scenarios. As with the MBTI and DISCOVER's inventories, this is an untimed instrument, with most persons completing the PRF-E in approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
All these assessment tools create a “snapshot” of you as you relate to the world of work. The results are explained in a caring, open environment. Our goal at Sandhills Community College is the same as yours. We want to help you choose a career path wisely, one that will bring you much satisfaction.
