Sandhills Community College announces that Jeremy Thompson is the 2018 Academic Excellence Award winner.
After recovering from treatments given to battle Stage 4 lymphoma, Jeremy Thompson faced additional challenges. “While the cancer was gone,” Thompson said, “it had left its mark, and I still had challenges from Multiple Sclerosis. Needing to reenter the workforce meant I had to find a new career path.” A Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor suggested he contact Sandhills Community College.
Thompson did so, and after considering his options, he decided to pursue the field of Digital Media Technology.
Thompson quickly realized Sandhills was a perfect choice. “The teachers and staff have helped me to not only survive but also thrive on this new journey,” he said.
Eager to give back to the school that gave so much to him, Thompson became a Peer Tutor. “Tutoring has allowed me to help other students on their journey,” he said.
Thompson is a member of, Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges. Through PTK, he says he has “found even more opportunities to grow as a student and as a person.”
Each year, Sandhills Community College, students who have a 4.0 GPA and more than 50-hours completed toward their degree are reviewed and considered eligible for the North Carolina Community College System’s Academic Excellence Award. Faculty members submit a statement of support for a candidate and are allowed to vote. The list is then narrowed to the finalists with the strongest faculty support. Only one student from each of the 58 North Carolina community colleges receives the award each year.
Jeremy is grateful for the willingness of Sandhills to help students succeed. “If you are willing to try, and if you give it your best effort, you can succeed at Sandhills Community College.”
Summer and Fall Semesters 2018
Summer Semester curriculum classes Sessions A and B begin on May 22 and Session C begins on June 26. Fall Semester begins on August 15. New students can apply online through the link at sandhills.edu or in the Student Services offices in Stone Hall. The financial aid process begins at fafsa.gov and the college encourages all prospective students to apply. New students must submit transcripts, meet with a Student Success Center Associate, and attend Orientation prior to registering for classes.
Current and returning SCC students can register for summer and fall semester classes using WebAdvisor but are encouraged to first meet with their Advisor.More Posts
