Careers in Human Services/Substance Abuse

Those who work in Human Services/Substance Abuse help people who have problems with alcohol, drugs, gambling and eating disorders. They assist individuals who are addicted to drugs, helping them to identify behaviors and problems related to their addiction. In this profession, you will not only work with individuals, but you will often also work with family members who are affected by the addictions of their loved ones.

Graduates should qualify for positions in mental health, child care, family services, social services, rehabilitation, correction, and educational agencies. Graduates choosing to continue their education may select from a variety of transfer programs at senior public and private institutions.

 

Employment Prospects

Employment is expected to grow by 34 percent between 2006 and 2016, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. This occupation will have a very large number of new jobs arise, about 114,000 over the projection decade.

 

Our Program

Our program prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies that provide social, community and educational services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in substance abuse.

Students will take courses from a variety of disciplines. Emphasis in core courses is placed on development of relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes in human services. Fieldwork experience will provide opportunities for application of knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

The coursework and field work also meet credentialing requirements for C.S.A.C. in North Carolina
