| Course Description: |
This course establishes a foundation in algebraic concepts and problem solving. Topics include signed numbers, exponents, and order of operations, simplifying expressions, solving linear equations and inequalities, graphing, formulas, polynomials, factoring, and elements from geometry. Upon completion the student should be able to apply the above concepts in problem solving using appropriate technology.

| Goals and Objectives: |
When the course is completed, the student should be able to model and solve application problems while learning to
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide real numbers
- Apply the laws of integer exponents
- Simplify and evaluate expressions
- Translate from verbal into numeric, symbolic and graphic forms
- Solve linear equations and inequalities (numerically, analytically, and graphically)
- Graph equations in one and two variables
- Evaluate and solve literal equations
- Perform basic operations with polynomials
- Factor by the greatest common factor
- Factor ax2 + bx + c
- Define and describe the relationship among lines, angles, and geometric figures
- Determine the equation of a line
- Use appropriate technology

Sharp Scientific calculator (or similar), notebook, graph paper and ruler for chapter 7, and notepaper for written tests and assignments. Note: The textbook and calculator are available at the SCC Bookstore. |
