The Advanced Search Window

Your search begins at the Advanced Search Window. Note this window corresponds with the center tab near the top of the window. This search window offers multiple text boxes, boolean operators, searchable fields, and various search options which allow you to create a well-focused search.

1. Enter the term(s) you wish to search in the text box labeled "Find:".

Advanced Search Window
2. Use the drop menu list to the right of the text box, labeled "In", to select a searchable field (field code). For example, to search for the subject world economy select SU-Subject. Selecting a field allows you to construct a search using indexed headings referenced in either the citation or full display (or full text, if available).

3. Enter additional search terms in the optional text boxes.

4. Connect your multiple search terms with Boolean operators (AND, OR, But NOT) to create a very broad or a very narrow search. Use the drop menu list boxes to the left of each optional text box to select the Boolean operator that will connect your terms when searched.

  • The AND operator combines search terms so that each search result contains all of the terms. For example, travel and Europe will find articles that contain both “travel” and “Europe”.
  • The OR operator combines search terms so that each search result contains at least one of the terms. For example, college or university will find results that contain either “college” or “university”.
  • The NOT operator excludes terms so that each search result does not contain any of the terms that follow the NOT operator. For example, television NOT cable will find results that contain the term “television” but not the term “cable”.
5. Select from available search options. Select Limiter options to narrow search results or select Expander options to broaden search results.

Limiters:
&nbsp&nbsp&nbspFull Text - limits search results to full text articles.
&nbsp&nbsp&nbspMagazine - limits search results to articles from a specific magazine title.
&nbsp&nbsp&nbspDate Published - limits search results to articles published within a specified date range

Expanders:
&nbsp&nbsp&nbspAlso search for related words - expands search results to include synonyms and plurals of your terms.
&nbsp&nbsp&nbspSearch within full text articles - expands search results by finding keywords within full text articles.

6. Click the SEARCH Button to begin searching.
