Purpose    Mission    Goals

Boyd Library provides comfortable, pleasant surroundings for study and leisure reading in a 23,000 square foot building. Library materials are selected to support and supplement academic programs and to encourage students to become informed citizens. Materials are also selected to satisfy interests in various careers and to stimulate reading as a leisure-time activity.

The collection includes more than 79,000 volumes and extensive periodical holdings which include subscriptions to local, state, and national newspapers. There is a large microfilm and microfiche collection which includes a complete run of the New York Times from its beginning in 1851. There are computerized indices to newspaper and periodical articles such as Newsbank, NC LIVE, Books in Print, and WilsonWeb. The library's collection of over 1,000 videotapes contains feature films, documentaries, musicals, operas, plays, classic children's films, and PBS programs.

The Hastings Gallery, housed in the library, displays monthly exhibits of art, photographs, crafts, and other artifacts.

The Teresa C. Wood Reading Room provides a warm, inviting environment for reading the newspaper or curling up with a good book.

 

Purpose:

To contribute to the college and library missions and Goal 6: "To foster an atmosphere of friendliness, civility, and respect, and to provide support programs that support student learning and success" and Goal 8: "To ensure that the college is run efficiently; that modern technology is employed in all facets of the college's operations; that the campus is clean, safe, and beautiful; and that it raises the funds necessary to advance the excellence of its programs." and Goal 10: "To monitor program and service performance in each of the above areas and to use the data gathered to improve the college's effectiveness".

Mission:

The mission of Boyd Library is to serve the students and faculty of Sandhills Community College as well as, insofar as budget and staff permit, the students enrolled in baccalaureate programs on our campus and the members of the community who draw upon the college library for research and recreational use. In concert with this major mission, the library also seeks to comply with the Criteria for Accreditation of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and with the American Library Association Standards for Community, Junior, and Technical College Learning Resources Programs.

Goals:

  1. Provide resources that are adequate to support the instructional programs of the college.
  2. Provide equipment - computers, copiers, etc. -which is updated or replaced on a regularly scheduled basis so as to ensure library patrons with adequate support.
  3. Provide a sufficient number of professional support staff to perform adequate services to library patrons.
  4. Provide library staff with regular opportunities for professional development and/or specialized training.
