Giving To SCCF
Helping to Ensure Opportunity and Excellence
There are many ways to make a gift to Sandhills Community College. Gifts can be made at any time during the year and may be designated for a specific purpose or may be given unrestricted (which provides the college with the opportunity to use the gift where it is needed most).

The Annual Fund for Sandhills
Many generous individuals, couples and organizations choose to support Sandhills and its students through The Annual Fund for Sandhills. The Annual Fund for Sandhills appeal is mailed to friends of the college each year in early November although gifts may be made at any time. The Annual Fund for Sandhills supports all those things that make a quality education possible—support for Sandhills’ superb faculty, instructional equipment for the college’s classrooms and laboratories, facilities which help teachers teach and students learn.

The SCC Guarantors
In 2002, the college’s Foundation Board made a commitment to secure the resources to help ensure the college’s mission of “educational opportunity of the highest quality for all the people of the Sandhills.” That year the SCC Guarantors was born.  Perhaps unique in the nation, the Guarantors are making possible the dream of an education and a better life for any student willing to work for it—regardless of his or her financial circumstance.  The SCC Guarantors ensure that no deserving student will be turned away because he or she cannot afford a college education.  The Guarantors Program helps students who are faced with significant financial challenges to stay in school. It supports the traditional college student as well as the older student—many times a displaced factory worker—who is coming to Sandhills to learn a new skill and develop a new career. Guarantors support provides tuition, books and fees as well as other expenses that are critical to the student’s capacity to stay in school and succeed in his or her program of study. Without the Guarantors, many students would be unable to continue their studies at Sandhills. Individuals or couples who make a gift of $1000 or more to the Sandhills Community College Foundation designated for the Guarantors Program are members for the year in which the gift is made.

The President’s 1963 Circle
The President’s 1963 Circle, inaugurated this year, supports both the Annual Fund for Sandhills and the SCC Guarantors. We hope you will consider becoming a President’s 1963 Circle member for 2008-2009. This is a year of considerable challenge for our students and our nation. An investment in Sandhills as a member of the President’s 1963 Circle is one of the best ways to support the future of our young people and of our community. Please note that President’s 1963 Circle members are also members of the SCC Guarantors for the year in which the gift is made.

Creating a Lasting Legacy - Planned Giving at Sandhills
Charitable gift planning, when done in concert with estate planning, provides an opportunity for friends of Sandhills to provide significant and lasting support for the college.

Planned gifts may be made in many ways. These include gifts by will, charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities. Gifts may also be made in the form of life insurance policies, individual retirement accounts and gifts of property such as real estate.

Gifts made through a charitable remainder trust or a gift annuity may also provide a significant life income benefit to the donor during his or her lifetime.

Scholarships — Ensuring Opportunity One Student at a Time
The gift of a scholarship is the ultimate expression of faith in the college, its mission—and most importantly—the future and potential of an individual student. Scholarships provide the resources to enable our students to succeed. They provide hope and opportunity to those who might have otherwise had none. A scholarship is an incentive to strive for excellence. It is also recognition of a job well done.

Scholarships at Sandhills can be a very personal experience. Scholarship donors are given the opportunity to meet their student recipients at a special scholarship reception held in the spring each year.

Scholarship gifts may be made annually or supported through an endowed scholarship. For more information about creating a scholarship at Sandhills Community College, please contact Sherrill Matthews, Director of Foundation Operations at (910) 695-3712 or email at matthewss@sandhills.edu.

Supporting Programs, Facilities and Capital Needs
Since 1963, when Mrs. Mary Luman Meyer gave the gift of 250 acres of land on Airport Road in Southern Pines which created Sandhills Community College, the college has been blessed and enriched by the private support of its programs, facilities and capital needs.

These gifts have modernized classrooms, purchased state-of-the-art instructional equipment, created the renowned Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, and supported the high-quality cultural programs for which the college is known. During the past four decades, Sandhills has achieved a level of excellence rare among American colleges. Much of that has only been possible through the truly remarkable level of private support the college has received over the years. Please contact Rick Smith, Dean of Instutional Advancement (910) 695-3716 or email at smithr@sandhills.edu to learn more about the history of philanthropy at Sandhills Community College and how you can become a part of this very special tradition.
