GENERAL COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE: Be able to use the following devices.
Basic parts of a computer:
  • Disk drives:  Floppy drive and hard drive.
  • Keypad:  Alphabet and numerical keys; arrow keys; delete, home, end, page, page up, page down, tab, caps lock, insert, and num lock keys.
  • Basic screen operations:  Start button, scroll bar, status bar, menus, icons, tool bars, close, minimize, maximize.
WORD PROCESSING SKILLS: Demonstrate proficiency in the following areas.
Working with Documents
  • Creating documents.
  • Creating file structure on hard drive and saving documents on a removable disk and on hard drive via network.
  • Closing documents.
  • Opening saved documents from removable disk and network.
  • Printing documents.
  • Saving documents as text or rich text format.
Working with Text
  • Formatting font style and size.
  • Setting margins.
  • Setting and using tab function.
  • Selecting line spacing.
  • Centering text.
  • Formatting features: underlining, italicizing, boldfacing.
  • Highlighting, copying, cutting, and pasting text.
  • Creating bulleted or numbered lists.
  • Deleting text.
  • Using word wrap.
Using Functions
  • Inserting page numbers and page breaks.
  • Creating header with page number.
  • Using undo key.
  • Using spelling/grammar check tools.
  • Commenting on documents.
  • Tracking changes.
USING THE INTERNET: Demonstrate proficiency in the following areas.
  • Accessing the Internet.
  • Using search engines.
  • Identifying and copying Web addresses (URLs).
  • Using online academic databases.
  • Copying and pasting text from Web pages.
  • Sending and forwarding e-mail messages.
  • Sending attachments in e-mail messages.
  • Using academic courseware to hold online discussions.
