Counselor – Student Support Services TRIO Grant

Sandhills Community College welcomes applications for a Student Support Services (TRIO Grant) Counselor. This full-time, 12 month position is funded by a federal Student Support Services TRIO Grant (Project Promise) to help low-income, first-generation, and students with learning disabilities complete post-secondary degrees. The successful candidate will report to the Project Director and will be responsible for providing individualized academic support to a cohort of 160 participants. The Counselor collaborates with the project team to assist students in overcoming barriers to meet their academic and personal goals.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in counseling and experience working with disadvantaged populations is required. Experience in a postsecondary institution is preferred. The Counselor must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and have the ability to work collegially with all faculty and staff. Detailed duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Provides personal, social, academic, and career counseling services to participants;
  • Assists in the intake process for new project participants;
  • Administers interest, skills, or values assessments to participants to aid in academic and personal development;
  • Helps participants develop time management skills;
  • Provides four-year college transfer information to program participants interested in transferring;
  • Assists participants in securing admission and financial aid for enrollment in four-year institutions;
  • Arranges college transfer visits;
  • Develops profiles of individual participants which outline barriers to success in the project and strategies for overcoming these barriers;
  • Maintains documentation for project evaluation and assists with annual evaluation;
  • Collaborates with project staff to provide individualized services for students;
  • Assist with monitoring student progress;
  • Aids program associate in advertising project activities and completing newsletter;
  • Refers students to appropriate community resources as needed;
  • Develops and facilitates workshops for participants;
  • Assists with all project activities;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minority Male Mentoring Program Coordinator

Sandhills Community College seeks applications for a part-time (20-hour/wk.) Minority Male Mentoring Program Coordinator within the Department of Student Services. Reporting to the Vice President of Student Services, the Program Coordinator oversees the development and implementation of the Minority Male Mentoring Program to ensure quality and performance related to recruiting, screening, matching, monitoring and closing relationships of the program through collaborative efforts with campus resources. In addition to providing academic, social and professional opportunities for minority males, the Coordinator will also serve as an Advising Associate in the Student Services Division; assisting students upon testing and providing additional support to the division as needed. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create and oversee implementation of all operations of the program.
  • Develop and maintain policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Serve as a mentor to male students and manage a caseload of 20-30 participants within the program.
  • Develop annual schedules and reports for program activities to collaborate with local, state and community-based organizations for training on drug prevention and substance abuse per project goals.
  • Schedule and attend two (2) professional conferences per academic year to increase knowledge of best practices for mentoring programs.
  • Collaborate with college academic support services to identify program goals and objectives for at- risk male population.
  • Provide follow-up services and advance program activities to include life skills and academic-personal development workshops that support project goals.
  • Collect and evaluate data to foster program excellence. Implement necessary changes to propose solutions to program areas that need special attention.
  • Communicate with college personnel and committee on student success as needed and act as college spokesperson for the program on campus, in the community, and at workshops and conferences.
  • Design and implement strategies to recruit culturally diverse volunteers.
  • Manage program budget.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred; in social work, psychology, and/or education. Experience working with post-secondary and developmental students preferred. Experience working with racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse populations. Two (2) or more years experience in mentoring or program development and/or working with community organizations and/or schools. Excellent organizational, writing, verbal and interpersonal skills required. Creativity and flexibility are essential in assuming significant responsibility.
