Fair Hiring Policy

It is the policy of Sandhills Community College to fill vacant and newly created positions with individual whose talents and experience best equip them to help the college accomplish its mission.

All full-time positions available at the college will be posted campus-wide. Because Sandhills seeks to provide opportunities for the upward mobility of its employees, all college personnel will have the opportunity to apply for these positions. If either the supervisor, the vice-president, the director of human resources, or the president feels it is appropriate, the search will be extended to include candidates from outside the college. In either case, the college will observe the following Fair Hiring Policy:

  1. A meeting with the dean/supervisor, the director of human resources, and appropriate vice president will be scheduled at which time salary range, minimum credentials, guidelines for advertising, and the timetable for hiring will be discussed. In addition, at this meeting a diverse interview team will be selected, the interview process will be discussed, prioritization of qualifications will be established, and effective interviewing guidelines will be reviewed.

  2. The dean/supervisor will draft the ad and submit it to the director of human resources.

  3. The actual advertising and receipt of the applications will be the responsibility of the director of human resources, who will follow the college's fair hiring procedures. From incoming applications, he will retain all data sheets and then give all applications to the dean/supervisor. The director of human resources will write the letters of acknowledgement of receipt to all applicants. The dean/supervisor will then review the applications and select candidates for interviews.

  4. Once the dean/supervisor has selected the candidates to be interviewed and prior to these interviews, the director of human resources will ensure that all candidates meet the required qualifications, as advertised.

  5. The candidates will be invited for interviews by the dean/supervisor who will schedule and arrange all conferences, lectures or skills demonstrations, and meetings in the interview process. The interview will be conducted by the team.

  6. Subsequently, a comprehensive investigation of professional references and a criminal background check will be executed at this time. The human resources director will assist with this process.

  7. At the end of the interviewing process, the dean/supervisor will recommend to the vice president the one (or two) finalist(s) for consideration for employment.

  8. The director of human resources must endorse the final candidate with respect to all provisions of the fair hiring procedures.

  9. Final approval of employment and salary will be made by the president upon recommendation of the appropriate vice president.

  10. Contracts will be issued by the president. Timely letters of notification to all unsuccessful applicants will be the responsibility of the dean/supervisor.

  11. In keeping with its Fair Hiring Policy, the college is committed to implementing a search procedure that seeks to find qualified members of diverse populations to fill openings when they become available.
Forms and appropriate checklists may be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.
