Essential Functions Policy

Medical Laboratory Technology Program

The college will provide services and training, without discrimination, to any academically qualified person who meets the following standards requisite to admission and/or participation in the medical laboratory technology program. The following is a list of the essential technical abilities and skills that applicants for admission must possess:

  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to use hand(s) or prosthetic devices with coordination
  • Fine Motor: Ability to manipulate small objects with fingertips or adaptive devices
  • Mobility: Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, maneuver in the laboratory, around instruments, and in patient care settings to perform venipuncture, lifting and handling equipment, supplies, and tools
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to distinguish colors and color changes; clear from cloudy and distinguish objects through a microscope, read procedure manuals, specimen labels and computer screens
  • Hearing: Ability to communicate and receive information from instructors, patients and other hospital personnel
  • Speech: Ability to verbally communicate in English
  • Writing: Ability to communicate effectively in written form in English
  • Reading : Ability to read, understand, and follow directions printed in English
  • Emotional Stability: Ability to work accurately and safely under stress, adapt to changing environments and prioritize tasks
  • Personal Attributes: Must demonstrate integrity, responsibility, tolerance, and respect

This policy shall be interpreted and applied consistent with requirements of all state and federal laws concerning education of handicapped students.
