The Web Technologies curriculum prepares graduates for careers in the information technology arena using computers and distributed computing to disseminate and collect information via the web.
Course work in this program covers the terminology and use of computers, network devices, networks, servers, databases, applications, programming languages, as well as web applications, site development and design. Studies will provide opportunity for students to learn related industry standards.
Graduates should qualify for career opportunities as designers, administrators, or developers in the areas of web applications, websites, web services, and related areas of distributed computing. The WebTechnologies (WEB) curriculum at Sandhills Community College trains students in the depth and breadth of Internet-related technologies, including
Web page design and graphics,
Web programming
(HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Multimedia
Javascript, PHP, MySQL, Web Services).
The full two-year degree is presently only available in the day.
Also available is a six course Web Design certificate (classes available day or evening) that has as its goal the training of individuals principally in "client-side" web design and programming. Client-side technologies covered by the courses listed below include HTML, CSS, Javascript, web graphics (Photoshop), Internet multimedia. All the courses in this certificate count towards the degree.
SCC also offers two Web Content Management Certificates which teach the skills necessary to create effective database-driven web sites. The technologies covered by this certificate include Javascript, PHP, MySQL, and the Joomla open source CMS.
Opportunities abound in all areas of Web technologies and will grow even greater in the next decade. Corporations and government institutions have great need for the skills taught in this curriculum. This field also offers excellent prospects for those who wish to become independent contractors or consultants.
