Youth Summer Enrichment

Sandhills Community College Youth Summer Enrichment Programs are exciting and educational programs for students ages 8-14.  Programs are designed to provide fun, hands-on learning activities that promise to develop and build skills, encourage creativity, and fuel a passion for lifelong learning.  These programs are sure to become an unforgettable adventure full of inspiring accomplishments, treasured memories, and new friends!

Spaces are limited - register early!



General Information

Call the Continuing Education registration line (910)695-3980 from 8-5pm Monday through Thursday or 8-4pm on Friday.  You can also register in person at the Continuing Education registration office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall.  Credit cards accepted over the phone. Cash, check, credit cards and money orders accepted in person.

As soon as registration is complete, print, sign, and return the 2017 Summer Enrichment Program Application and other forms as required per program. You may download the 2017 Summer Enrichment Program Application here.

All completed forms may be submitted by one of the following:

Registrations will be accepted up to one (1) business day before the start date of the program or until the class is filled.  If the class is filled, your child’s name will be put on a waitlist in the order the calls are received and will be contacted if a space becomes available.

Release/Waiver of Liability Form:
In order to participate in any program, all students must have a signed Summer Enrichment Program application, release/waiver of liability and a photo release on file. Parents or guardians should complete and return all forms as instructed. You may also download the forms here.

Age Policy:
All programs are for youth ages 8-14, unless specified in the program description. No younger or older students will be admitted.

Supervision Policy:
Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian except when under the direct supervision of SCC instructors or staff. Children may not be left unattended before or after the program. Students should be brought to their program no earlier than 15 minutes before start time and picked up no later than 15 minutes after end time.

Transportation:
Students and their parents or guardians are responsible for all transportation arrangements. Please pick up and deliver your student at assigned locations.

Refund Policy:
Refunds will be issued to students who withdraw from a program at least one business day prior to the class start date.  No credit will be issued for programs dropped on or after the class start date.  To withdraw your registration, please call (910)695-3980.

EquestrianHorsemanship 101
Ever wonder what it’s like to own a horse? This is your chance to spend 3 fun-filled days at beautiful Heather Ridge Farm learning about safety, horse care, feeding, grooming and best of all – riding! And since you’re not having fun unless you’re getting dirty, you will also gain hands-on experience with daily barn and horse farm chores. This is for the serious horse lover! Bring a lunch, drinks and snacks daily. Boots with a heel required. ages 10-14

Boots and Bridles
Spend your days at Muddy Creek Farm Riding Center enjoying all things horse! Learn essential safety, basic grooming, horse care, and, of course, riding. When you’re not hanging out with the horses, you’ll have fun swimming in the pool and doing arts and crafts. Bring a lunch, drinks and snacks daily.  Boots required. ages 10-14

Beginner Riding Lessons
Start your child’s horsemanship skills at one of the Sandhills’ favorite riding centers - Muddy Creek Farm Riding Center. Riders are paired with seasoned lesson horses and, in this six week program, will learn basic horsemanship and riding skills such as parts of the saddle and tack, grooming, mounting, guiding your horse, stopping and steering in the walk and trot. Riders must wear stretchable pants/jeans and boots. ages 10-14

ArtsUnsinkable Creative Society
Sometimes life’s voyage is smooth sailing and other times the waters are rough...the trick is to be confident that you can stay afloat no matter what comes your way. On this journey to self discovery, certified Kaizen Muse Creativity Coach and US Army Master Resilience Trainer Nicole Sinay Torres will encourage girls ages 12-17 to take the helm & chart their course by using creative writing prompts, art journaling, dynamic group discussion, and mixed media art projects designed to reinforce expert resiliency skills, create a motivational peer environment, and inspire the personal courage needed to live a truly unsinkable life. Creative Adventurers' Club
Rising 6th through 9th graders are invited to unlock the secrets of their own personal resilience through a series of creative adventures! In this workshop, certified Kaizen Muse Creativity Coach and US Army Master Resilience Trainer Nicole Sinay Torres leads kids through journal prompts, group discussion, and creative projects designed to reinforce expert resiliency skills in a fun and unique format. The Creative Adventurers’ Club is perfect for preparing kids to take on life’s most challenging adventures in healthy, creative, and self-expressive ways. Ages 10-14 or rising 6th-9th grade.

Focusing on creativity over performance, Professor Herrick incorporates the fundamentals of singing, dancing, acting, voice/diction training and creative drama to increase self confidence and self awareness in a fun and safe atmosphere. Black Rocket Technology

TechMake Your First Video Game
If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 8-11 and 11-14

App Attack
Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program . Ages 8-11 and 11-14

Minecraft® Designers
If you love the game Minecraft, and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. To access their project at home students, must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Make Your First 3D Video Game
Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! This class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes and create an immersive 3D world. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and story telling. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Minecraft® Animators
Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years . Mac users can play their project at home, but will not be able to edit the project without a PC.

Video Game Animation
Take your game design skills to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in your very own game. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for $15 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

FAQ

Kids outsideMy child is only seven, but is very mature. Can I sign her up for one of your programs?
Unfortunately, we will not allow younger students to enroll in our programs.

Are there any special requirements to sign up for these programs?
Other than the minimum age requirements specified for each program, all students are welcome to enroll.

The program my child wants is full, can you squeeze in just one more?
Unfortunately, if the program is full, we cannot take any more students.  Please add your child to the program waiting list and you will be notified if a spot becomes available.

Is there a chance that the program might be cancelled?
All programs have a minimum number of students required. If the minimum is not met, you will be notified and will receive a full refund.

I’m not sure if we’ll be able to sign up for a certain program until the last minute. Can we sign up at the door?
If the program has openings, we will accept walk-ins. Please note that if the minimum enrollment has not been met the class will be canceled.  To check a programs status please call (910)695-3980.  A parent or guardian must accompany the child to the program to sign appropriate forms and pay the fee.

Can I sit in on the program with my child?
Adults will not be allowed to stay at the program with students. If there are special circumstances, please contact the Program Director, Rose George, at (910)695-3775 and we will evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis.

What if we need to drop out of a program?

I have a few questions about the program. Do we need to bring anything? Where is it? I’m sure I’ll come up with more questions.

What about permission forms and emergency contact information? Will I need to fill anything out?
