Course #3209
Instructor: David Blide

This course covers current theory and practical applications related to the development and management of small business social media marketing campaigns. Emphasis is placed on conducting research, and analyzing and reviewing current practices in effective social media strategies. Upon completion, students should be able to discuss and evaluate new and existing social media marketing campaigns for small businesses.

David Blide, social media director for Easey Street Social and Sandhills alumnus, will lead the instruction for the program. Blide was named as one of the 100 most influential people on Facebook by Hub-Spot and is considered one of the top in his field. “This partnership with Sandhills Community College is a step in the right direction to educate people that social media truly can be your friend in business,” says Blide.

The demand for social media jobs has exploded, even as overall unemployment hovers around 10%. A recent study showed that 59 of the Fortune 100 companies have at least one employee who works full time in social media, and that job postings directly related to social media have soared 600% in the last five years.

Demand for social media skills has outstripped the supply of candidates with training in communications and the analytical skills to track the effectiveness of a media campaign A recent search on LinkedIn yielded over 4000 jobs related to social media and some of them are even local. Search for social media manager listings on monster.com or Simplyhired and you will find similar results.  It’s all part of an effort to get in on a hiring spree that shows no immediate signs of slowing, says Jim Durbin, a social media headhunter and entrepreneur.

“Our program is the only one like it in the state,” says Alan Duncan, senior director of Business and Industry Services at the college. “We are excited about this partnership and feel that we will have a cutting edge program outlined for students that will both challenge and equip them with necessary skills.”
