Family Literacy

 

Family Literacy classes at Sandhills Community College offer parents of young children the opportunity to obtain their GED, learn or improve their English Language skills or improve their skills in Reading and Math while their children, ages 0-5 are placed in a NC regulated facilities that will address their early education.

Daycare and transportation may be provided.

 

Program Components

The main components for Family Literacy Classes are GED preparation or English language acquisition and/or proficiency.  In addition to the GED or ESL preparation, students will also receive training on the following: Computer Literacy, Job Readiness, Parenting Education, Life Skills and Citizenship Exam Preparation.

Parenting Education provides students with the skills needed to become more effective parents. Topics include child development, discipline, read-aloud story sharing, and other areas designed to increase the interaction between parents and children.

Children are provided with developmentally appropriate activities through existing preschool/daycare programs. Classes encourage active exploration, personal discovery, and positive interaction with peers and adults.
