Coaching Staff
Head Coach Aaron Denton (2nd Season at Sandhills, 10th Overall)
B.S. Management, Guilford College 2000; MBA, UNC Greensboro 2002
Phone: (910) 246-4121
Email: dentona@sandhills.edu
Office: 222 Dempsey Student Center
Aaron Denton was named athletic director and head basketball coach at Sandhills Community College June 1, 2008. Denton came to Sandhills after two successful years rebuilding the men’s basketball program at Louisburg College (Louisburg, NC).
Taking over a program that won only six times the year before, he guided the Hurricanes to a 17-13 record and a top 20 national ranking. In Denton’s second season at Louisburg his team finished 24-7 and seven players moved on to continue their academic and athletic careers at four year institutions. In his first season at Sandhills he mentored All-American Germann Bostic. Phillip Moultrie joined Bostic as All-Region selections.
Prior to Louisburg College Denton was an assistant coach at Miami Dade College (Miami, FL) to Butch Estes. He also served as Head Coach at Southeast Guilford High School and as assistant coach at UNC Greensboro and Guilford College (Greensboro, NC).
Denton played football and basketball at Guilford College and graduated with a B.S. in Management. He furthered his education with an M.B.A. from UNC Greensboro while he worked under coach Fran McCaffery (now head coach at Siena College).
From an early age academics has played a major role in Coach Denton’s life. He is committed to helping young men and women reach their goals both on and off the court. “Our purpose is to prepare our student-athletes academically, socially and athletically so they can be successful in those endeavors after they move on from Sandhills.”
At Sandhills Denton’s responsibilities include overseeing the Flyers athletic program. This 2008-09 season included volleyball, men’s basketball, and men’s and women’s golf. Gus Ulrich and Kevin Whitaker guided the men’s golf team to a second place finish in Region X led by Medalist Chris Horne. Women’s volleyball finished a very respectable first season tied for third place in Region X.
A Bunn, NC native, Denton is married to the former Ami Crosby and they reside in Pinehurst with their daughter, Savannah Claire, born October 10, 2008.

Assistant Coaches
Theron ‘TJ’ Brower (1st Season, 2nd Overall)
B.S. Engineering NC A&T; M.S. Engineering, Vanderbilt
Phone: (910) 695-3745 Email: browert@sandhills.edu
Office: 227 Stone Hall
Having joined the faculty as a Mathematics Instructor in January of 2009, Theron Brower will embark on his collegiate coaching career as the men’s basketball assistant coach under head coach Aaron Denton.
His duties include recruiting and mentoring student-athletes, game preparation with a focus on team defensive strategies, on-court instruction working primarily with point and shooting guards, and other administrative duties.
Brower, a native of Robbins, N.C., was a three-sport athlete at North Moore High School. During his senior year, he lead the Mustangs to the state playoffs where they defeated East Surry in the first round and later fell to the defending State Champion Cavaliers of Burlington Cummins in the second round.
After graduating from North Moore in 2000, Brower accepted full academic scholarships to complete his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering respectively at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (2000-2004) in Greensboro, NC and Vanderbilt University (2004-2007) in Nashville, TN.
After a brief tenure as a Software Engineer in Melbourne, FL., Brower returned to North Carolina for a change in career paths and to reside near his family. Upon his return, Brower was afforded the opportunity to immediately begin doing what he enjoyed the most – teaching and coaching basketball. Prior to joining Sandhills, Brower served as a long-term substitute at North Moore during the 2008 – 2009 academic year, while assisting head coach Grant Smith as the men’s varsity assistant coach.
“Robbins, NC and Moore County itself have always been special to me. I have seen and enjoyed many places, but this is my home. I never imagined that my wife and I would be able to return to our home towns one day, be successful in our careers and have the opportunity to do the things we love. Being able to join the team of scholars at Sandhills Community College and assist in mentoring and educating our students while enjoying the privilege of coaching basketball…it couldn’t get any better.”
Theron and his wife Jakia, a former Pinecrest High School student (1998 – 2000) and North Moore High School graduate (2000 – 2002), are excited to return to the Moore County community and are proud to claim it as home.

Alex Orozco (2nd Season, 2nd Overall)

He looks forward to coaching basketball after graduation. He is the son of Colleen Valente and played basketball at Cape Coral High School for Dave Funk.
