Test Exemptions & Placement Testing

In order to register for curriculum classes at Sandhills Community College, you must take the college placement test or be deemed exempt.

Am I exempt from the placement test?

  1. Are you currently a high school student or did you graduate from a North Carolina high school  within the past five years with an unweighted GPA ≥ 2.6 and four qualifying math classes?
    *If you answered YES, submit official high school transcript to the Admissions Office.
  2. Have you taken the COMPASS, ASSET, or ACCUPLACER test for another college within the last five Years?
    *If you answered YES, submit official test scores to the Testing Office.
  3. Have you taken the ACT or SAT test within the past 5 years?
    SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 480 Math: 530
    ACT: English: 18 Reading: 22 Math 22
    *If you answered YES, submit official test scores to the Testing Office.
  4. Have you completed college-level courses at another college or university including English or  Math?
    *If you answered YES, submit ALL official college transcripts to the Admissions Office.
  • If you answered yes to any of these questions, please submit all required documents referenced above for review.
  • If approved for a placement test exemption, you will be notified by mail or at your scheduled orientation.

  1. How do I prepare?
  2. Where should I go?
    Placement testing occurs in the Student Success Center located in Stone Hall, Student Services.  You may begin the test anytime between 8 AM and 12 PM, Monday – Thursday.  Speak with a Student Success Specialist to obtain a testing ticket.
  3. What should I Bring?
    • $7.00 cash/check/credit card – exact change preferred
    • Photo ID
  4. When can I test?
    REGULAR TESTING HOURS:
    No Appointment Necessary
    Monday—Thursday
    Arrive 8:30 am – 12:30 pm
    Testing days and times are subject to change – Please refer to your testing information sheet or call 910-695-3835 to verify dates and times.

Transfer Scores to Another School

Official placement test scores can be transferred to another institution. A written request is required. There is no fee for transferring placement test scores. Simply complete the Placement Test Score Transfer form and fax it to 910.695.3981, mail it Attn: Testing Office, or email it to testing@sandhills.edu.
