The Business of Creating Success
House Manager, The Bethany House, Southern Pines, North Carolina
Barbara Rochester was working at a local manufacturing plant when it suddenly closed. “When I lost my job, I had two options,” Rochester said. “I could collect unemployment while I looked for a job or go back to school and do something that was of interest to me. Since I seemed to be the person that others came to with their problems, it was natural for me to look into the Human Services Technology program at Sandhills.
“Having been out of school for so many years, I needed tutoring to help me get back on track,” she said. The Tutoring Center is a free service for Sandhills students. Math and English Labs also help students succeed.
“My instructors not only gave me the knowledge I needed,” Rochester said, “they provided the resources and opportunities I needed to secure a rewarding job. During my internship at The Bethany House, I was offered a job two weeks before graduation.” Rochester is now the House Manager for The Bethany House. This facility provides a supervised residential environment for women recovering from substance abuse allowing them to reenter society and lead a self-supporting life.
