When Algene Johnson’s employer converted its payroll system to a computer-based system, the computer skills she received as a student at Sandhills Community College were most helpful.

Johnson works as a Medical Office Assistant at the NC Department of Correction where she has been employed for the past 19 years. She earned an associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, a certificate in Microcomputer Servicing and another certificate in Microsoft Office Systems.

“The lessons I learned regarding teamwork were of great value,” said Johnson. “We had to take computers completely apart and were only successful in putting them together when we worked as a team.”

Johnson was not only working while going to college, she was raising three sons. “While I was working toward my educational goals, my sons were realizing the value of higher education,” said Johnson.

“Sandhills is a wonderful college because they make it affordable to achieve a degree,” she added. “People in this region have a wonderful opportunity to advance their careers and better their lives through higher education.”
