Algene JohnsonJeff Yow

Owner, Chatlee Boat & Marine, Sanford, North Carolina

When it was announced in 2008 that Sandhills Community College would reinstate its athletics program, Jeff Yow became the first corporate sponsor. Being able to play basketball for the college in the late 1970s was the driving force behind his choice to attend Sandhills. Because it was instrumental in his life as a young man, his desire was to see the program positively impact other young people’s lives.

A Lee County native, Yow earned his associate’s degree and transferred to NC State University. After State, he came home to help run the family business, Chatlee Boat & Marine.

“Coming back to the Sandhills campus after all these years has been very rewarding,” said Yow. “The campus is absolutely beautiful, and it has grown in such an impressive way. It feels more like a university than a community college.”

Chatlee Boat & Marine employs about 40 people; many are former Sandhills students. It is one of the region's best-known marine operations, selling new and pre-owned boats, outboard motors and parts. The dealership has been recognized nationally for sales volume. Chatlee was awarded Boat and Motor Dealer magazine’s “Dealer of the Year” in 2006. It is Suzuki’s largest outboard motor dealer.
